 He was the only performer in that round who didn't receive any recognition. And it's a shame, because he's such a good performer. So, we asked him back to be the first performer in this series.

 It feels like there was a really, in some ways, kind of fashiony, contrived feeling that surrounds that scene. We always kind of were going around saying we're writing the music we wanted to be writing and somehow found ourselves in the middle of that. There were very few bands that were labeled that way that we really respected musically or were good friends with.

 We'll be skating all over town to attract attention to the tournament. We'll be downtown skating to breakfast at Grill. Skating over to Fourth Avenue. Skating around in Reid Park.

 We're pretty regular guys. Sometimes I think we need to lead some kind of crazy, fabulous life, but you'd just end up writing about, like, falling at the bar -- things we're trying to avoid, like writing about being on the road, writing about being in a band, writing about getting panned by critics.

 I'm always writing from a place in my experience. Generally, I'm writing about something that I don't understand, and I'm writing to make sense of it. It's a discovery process. In that way, it's kind of therapeutic for the writer. If you stumble on something really good, like I did with 'Mercy Now,' then it becomes therapeutic for more than just the writer.

 Right now, I'm thinking in terms of just having a good band, man. Having a good act for the stage. Being a good performer, you know? Connected to that is future recordings, and future tunes, that kind of stuff.

 Pex Tufvesson går under navnet Mahoney i demo-verdenen. Guys were just kind of skating around the puck, and Calder picked it up. He's a good shooter, and from 10 feet away he let go a pretty good shot.

 I was kind of afraid like, `What if I'm not good any more? What if I need to be a cyclist to be a good skater? What if taking that element away meant I would suck at skating?' ... I was really unsure and frustrated.

 I don't think you have to be a top performer to retain customers, but you need to be a good performer to satisfy customers. Customers are not going to wait around four days for you to respond to their question. Speed and accuracy are important.

 But writing and making theater are all-consuming. ... It's primarily a question of energy. The right kind of energy for writing can be dissipated, especially by teaching literature or drama, by looking at it in an entirely different kind of way.

 Skating will always be a part of my life whether I am skating to compete or skating for recreation.

 There's just this mindset that we must do drugs, drink and make trouble, but most of the time skating keeps you out of that stuff. If you aren't skating, then you have time for that kind of stuff.

 Writing is my ultimate ambition. I respect it above all. I didn't strive to be a performer. It's come so easily for me. In some ways I feel guilty about that. On the other hand, I enjoy it precisely because I'm not consumed by it.

 He has just smoothed it out. Fifteen, 20 years ago, not as many people were able to improve their skating as much as now. It might be a combination of the players being in top condition, that they have more access to skating instructors. Maybe the modern skates allow you to improve your skating.
