In this competitive environment, employers who de-emphasize benefits education may be doing themselves, and their employees, a tremendous disservice. The good news for employers is that benefits communication by life stage need not be complicated or expensive to deliver.

 We negotiated with each of the major carriers so that employees would have their choice. If we contract with a single carrier and [the carrier] has a problem, then that becomes our headache.

 Our government has made a number of promises to the men and women who served in our nation's armed forces. Sadly, these promises of health care, education and other benefits have existed more in rhetoric than in reality.

 The increase is to attract and retain employees. As we try to do recruitment we are not getting the right number of qualified candidates, and then we have to take a look at our salaries to find out what's at issue.

 The long-term goal of this project is to establish an ongoing partnership to identify and implement activities and strategies to assist industry members with recruiting, training and retaining qualified workers.

 We're currently in multi-employer plans. We want it to be a single employer plan. It would be administered by both the Teamsters and UPS and our people would get the benefit of the dollars we're spending for their pensions and it would be a much more secure pension for them,

 This covers the cost of US forces, which is the major portion of the supplemental, with pay and benefits for reservists, war-related benefits, fuel, spare parts and logistics.

 If you've got a proposition that gives you the opportunity to save the pensions of hardworking employees and protect the taxpayers from not having to fulfill that obligation, that's a win-win, ... The taxpayer doesn't get stuck and the company honors its benefits.

 An employer must keep its promises. If you can prove that the employer promised you a 6 percent commission, with no cap, and then reneged on the promise, you have the makings of a successful lawsuit.

 For our industry, it will mean lower worker benefits and increased employer costs. The bill increases weekly (unemployment) benefits for higher-paid construction workers at the expense of UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers) grocery workers.

 We have a major, major philosophical problem with state government coming into a private business and telling them what kind of benefits they must pay their employees.

 They will never come out and say this is in lieu of care. But we see a lot of employees who will say it is in lieu of and will go that route. It means again lower cost to the carrier and the HMO that's providing the benefits.

 When they lost their jobs, they lost everything, ... income, benefits, friends, reputation, and sometimes even family. Their years of work didn't deliver what they thought the organization had promised. They'd had an unwritten social compact with their employer that if they did their job well, they could keep it until retirement.
