I think the street overreacted to fuel costs and Y2K. But this is not to say that estimates won't come down for the first quarter. Fuel prices are even higher now and it's very difficult in short term for carriers to control that cost.

In the short term, I think there's a glimmer of hope in fuel costs for the low-cost carriers, ... Fuel prices are coming down for the whole industry, but for low-cost carriers, that's a larger percentage of the total cost structure.

Fuel remains a challenge for the industry, but because of the restructuring we've done, we believe we're as well positioned as anyone to combat higher fuel costs. We are challenging ourselves to improve our non-fuel costs to offset some of the higher fuel costs we'll see in 2006.

Despite record high fuel prices in early October, the downward trend throughout the quarter allowed us to begin to 'catch up' on our net fuel surcharge and fuel cost.

Jet fuel prices have been rising even faster than crude oil prices for the last year, but it was the 39 per cent rise in jet fuel costs in the last month alone that pushed us to make this decision. We have made incredible progress in lowering our operational costs for over two years now. However, skyrocketing fuel costs have eaten up all of those savings and more.

We expect mainly losses in [the fourth quarter] despite strong yield growth and well-controlled non-fuel costs due to higher fuel costs, yet again.

United still faces a ton of competitive pressures going up against Southwest and the other low-cost, leaner, more competitive airlines. United and the other carriers still face high jet-fuel prices. That takes up a large chunk of their costs. They have cut so many costs since they went into bankruptcy. They cannot eliminate many more costs. Over time, fares will have to go up.

Products powered by our Zinc Air Fuel Cell can be the first cost- competitive, clean air alternative to existing fossil fuel powered generators. The lifetime and durability demands for these First to Market applications are more achievable in the short term than those of transportation and co-generation which require much longer life time and established fuel infrastructures.

While masked by the high cost of fuel, our restructuring initiatives have begun to produce tangible results this quarter in the form of increased unit revenue and lower mainline non-fuel costs.

Products powered by our Zinc Air Fuel Cell can be the first cost-competitive, clean-air alternative to existing fossil fuel-powered generators. The lifetime and durability demands for these first-to-market applications are more achievable in the short term than those of transportation and co-generation, which require much longer lifetime and established fuel infrastructures.

Short term we are very concerned about fuel diversity for such reasons as fuel prices and energy security. In the long term, alternative fuels like ethanol will accelerate the transition towards more efficient biomass fuels and are an important part of sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction.

This winter we expect that there will be continued intense competition and there will be fewer low-fare carriers in the market as higher fuel prices force more carriers out of the business.

Whilst we do not foresee any major reduction in fuel prices in the medium term, at present the company, and the industry in general, appears to be coping satisfactorily with the exposure to a high fuel cost environment.

We've got more seats that are filled and we're getting higher fares for them. That's your best case scenario. If fuel was at $40 a barrel, we could be minting money right now. In 12 months we'll be talking about the problems with the low-cost carriers, not the (old line) carriers.

We simply don't know the extent of the economic and infrastructural damage in the Southeast. Of course, gas and heating fuel are going to be higher, and transportation of all goods will cost more in the short term.
