 North America continues to grow in importance for Toyota on a global basis. Putting something like a production support center in the U.S. only makes sense as they continue to add plants.

 Toyota is doing something its U.S. rivals can't -- building plants rather than closing them. That is going to broaden (Toyota's) regional reach in the United States and in North America. And that is a big advantage right now.

 We will continue to consolidate, but only to consolidate if it makes sense. China for us makes a lot of sense, because one-third of the steel production in the world is done in China. So, if you have global ambitions, you have to be there.

 Given the challenges we face in North America, it makes sense for me to assume control of GM North America's day-to-day operations and shorten the lines of communication and decision-making,

 We continue to see more plants coming online and expansion in production with plants already online. Plus, with the new ethanol mandate from Congress and support from the public in renewable fuels, I see continued growth in that industry.

 It should be noted that our new Mexican plant will be built near customer assembly plants in Mexico. It will not impact operations at other Behr America plants in North America.

 No matter what way you want to cut it, the contrast with is only that much more stark with Ford and GM. Toyota still has a much smaller production base in North America than GM or Ford, but increasing capacity as quickly as they have is an impressive feat.

 The team in North America, led by Mark Fields and supported by Anne Stevens, developed the plan for North America, drawing on their extensive global experience in Asia, Europe and The Americas. They have reenergized the Ford team to make it work, and they have the full support of the Ford Motor Company behind them.

 North America is still huge. By far, it's our largest center, and it will continue to be our largest engineering center. It's just that we're going through a difficult business period right now and it's getting right-sized.

 Ironically, GM has lost just about exactly what Toyota has gained. In North America, it's very much a situation right now where Toyota is moving forward while GM is really managing its decline and trying to figure out how to manage such a big company with such a big market share decline.

 It makes sense for Chinese companies to tie up with global companies to form an alliance in environmentally-friendly technology, given that the Chinese auto market will continue to grow and the government is getting concerned about pollution issues.

 Record-high U.S. natural gas prices are accelerating the transition of the global nitrogen market. Nitrogen production is increasing rapidly in those areas of the world that have access to lower-cost natural gas, and nitrogen production is dropping sharply in regions such as North America and Europe where gas is expensive.
