 Milwaukee is different from what I'm used to. It's cold and it's much more of an old town, a traditional city. When I first got here, compared to the cities I'm used to, Milwaukee was the complete opposite. It took awhile but I'm adjusted to it now.

 Fred Silverman (then-president of NBC) first saw the characters of Laverne and Shirley on 'Happy Days' and thought it would make a good series.

 Most people view Manchester as a manufacturing city, still. We have been working over the last 30 years to shed that image. With a project such as this coming into the city, I think it will really help develop that image that Manchester really is a college town.

 We spent a lot of time defining and redefining bowling. Traditionally, people have thought about bowling as kind of mom and pop, Laverne and Shirley-ish. We've brought a whole different sense of style and a charm to it. It's very sexy.

 Baltimore's often called the most northern Southern town. It has a distinct essence. It's definitely post-industrial, definitely Rust Belt, very working-class. I grew up outside of Washington, and I felt I was moving to a completely different place when I moved 30 miles north out of college.

 The image of St. Helena is inaccurate. We sometimes say we know the city better than the City Council because we've ... hung out with some of the craziest people and heard some of the deepest, darkest secrets. This town isn't as pristine as it thinks it is.

 That was a big test for my back. It was really important just to play some matches and hopefully get the rust out of my game. Obviously, to win the tournament and going into New York with that under my belt is a great feeling.

 They could identify with Shirley. Brenda tried her best with her grassroots effort but she was a newcomer and the people did not know her as well as they did Shirley.

 The predominant emotion here, I think, is one of great sadness. The city is never going to be the same.

 Shirley's his female counterpart. They're wild horses knocking against a fence post, trying to push and see how far their work can take them. I think being challenged as an actress keeps Shirley young.

 [The film, currently in pre-production, will be shot entirely in Milwaukee and the surrounding communities, and will use local crews.] There's an extremely talented crew base here in Milwaukee, ... We're eager to showcase both the talent and the production environment that Milwaukee has to offer.

 When you're dealing with someone like Shirley, it's a little insulting to ask her to come in for a meeting. But I wanted to meet her first and talk to her about the character, because there was a very big 'if' on it for me. Shirley is such a powerful presence, personality and talent, and she has used that power effectively over a long and rich career. But I wanted to know she would be able to put a damper on all of that and go to a very quiet place to play this character who is literally hiding from life, who has put a lid on everything because of her guilt, her fear and her unresolved issues. If Shirley could go to that kind of a place, and then blossom as her character's life broadens, I thought it would be very exciting.

 Clearly, the election is going to be won in the Midwest and the Rust Belt, places where President Bush has been campaigning -- Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio -- places very similar to Iowa.
