 Gap isn't a growth story anymore. Its new fourth store concept targeting the 35-and-older customer will give it some growth. But essentially the important thing for the retailer to do now is to stay the course, fix the fashion issues, make operational improvements, close underperforming stores, manage inventory and generate cash.

 Kmart said it closed its worst performing stores because it couldn't maintain inventory once its vendors cut themselves off. Now that the stores are shuttered and inventory is up, Kmart is still doing less business than before. The company is still losing money and market share. I'm not sure the company can get past Christmas.

 We moved our original fashion show to coincide with the fashion week dates for next month. That will go ahead in any case. We still support the idea of a fashion week and will be working positively with the organisers.

They were not thinking of fashion as something that was up in the league with the antiques, urban studies, and architecture, and poetry - the classics. But somehow, today, fashion has really morphed into something much bigger than it was. With fashion, because there's so much immediacy, and our shows are so globally broadcast, it may be the most immediate visual manifestation of the zeitgeist.
