On the second anniversary gezegde

 On the second anniversary of Charles Taylor's flight to Nigeria, his continued impunity is undermining the rule of law in West Africa and putting civilians in the region at risk.

 Africa, outside of Nigeria, is back on track ... Nigeria remains the single greatest risk to eradication.

 We're committed to working with Nigeria and Liberia to make sure that Charles Taylor is brought to justice.

 We call on all governmental and inter-governmental actors in West Africa to ensure Taylor promptly appears for trial. The U.N. peacekeeping forces in Liberia and Sierra Leone will need to play their role to ensure justice can be done while stability in West Africa is maintained.

 The disappearance of Charles Taylor from Nigerian soil is a humiliating disgrace to Nigeria. Obasanjo must explain why this happened.

 This is a crucial moment for Washington to help West Africa break a devastating cycle of impunity.

 Charles Taylor, the former president of Liberia, was arrested this morning at the Nigeria Cameroon border. He was arrested in company of a driver and a woman and they have been taken into custody.

 [Nigerian officials have] a responsibility to turn him over to us. International law requires them to, ... West Africa and West African leaders need to understand it's the rule of law.

 My first choice is to bring him to Ethiopia because it is the second most populous country in [Africa] and it is very stable.... Ethiopia has given positive signs about welcoming Charles Taylor.

 It's within the ability of the Liberian people to seize their destiny, ... Unless he's brought to the bar of justice, eventually all of West Africa will be in jeopardy. And Nigeria won't be immune.

 The strategy of putting justice on hold for an elusive peace settlement has emboldened human rights abusers on both sides of the conflict. This approach has fueled a pervasive culture of impunity that has led to ever-increasing acts of violence against civilians.

 Such chaos in Nigeria could lead to disruption of oil supply, secessionist moves by regional governments, major refugee flow and instability elsewhere in West Africa.

 Today, Liberia and Sierra Leone are safer and more hopeful places. Today West Africa has moved one step closer to dismantling the devastating grip of impunity.
