en The only thing that's a little tricky about it is sometimes people assume that if it's a new song, it's a reflection of what you're feeling or going through now.

en I just love the phrase 'don't tread on me,' and it usually has political connotations, but in this particular song, it's not a political song, it's more about feeling frustrated and feeling volatile and just needing some space, ... It's a very personal song. But then titling the album Don't Tread on Me and the artwork, there's a few pretty scathing political comments made on there. We didn't want to go all political, but I think in this day and age you kind of need to say what you think about things 'cause it is such a crisis situation.

en That song was on the Dirt Band's Acoustic record, ... and in the time that passed between when we wrote it and when the Flatts cut it, what an amazing life that song had… People would come up to all of us writers long before it was this monster hit -- I even had someone in the grocery store -- asking for copies of the lyric because they wanted to get married to it. And that's a wonderful feeling…

en You watch the dance floor and people hear the song and you can see them trying to figure out during the song if it's about Nation. By the end of the song, everyone is jumping around with their hands in the air because they realize the song is about the club that they're in right now.

en In terms of raw numbers, there are a lot of people out there, but the competition is enormous. There is not a lack of people in the industry, but distilling down the best people is the tricky thing.

en I think the best answer to that is that they just aren't sure. Part of the equation is what other people think about a song or a product. We live in a social world where if we were the only person who liked a particular song, and no one else liked it, we ourselves might not like that song too long, either. Other people don't accept it, and that puts pressure on us to try and fit in.

And as you get older you have two kinds of people. You have the fortunate people who realise it early on, man. They let their freak flag fly. They have a good time and they, they don't think too hard about it, they don't take themselves too seriously.

And then there's those poor bastards on the other side that are still trying to play it cool, man. Everyday. "I'm not f*****d up".

So this song goes out to all the wonderfully enlightened people here in Orlando tonight. That know that it's okay to be a little bit f****d up every now and then.

en The sad thing is that people are going to think this is a reflection of rap music. But it's not a reflection ... people have lives outside of the music.

en Because it is moving and because we believe wild birds are implicated, predicting where it's going to flare up next is a very tricky thing to do, and being able to know the scale of the flare-up is also quite tricky.

It's a kind of a political song as well as a feeling song, and it's dated to a particular incident, kinda like 'Rockin' in the Free World.' I just don't write that many of them.
