 As I stand here and look out these big windows in all directions, I try to imagine how it was when the railroad was a big part of this town. So much history is wrapped up in the remembrance of those days. I feel like we are helping to preserve a part of history that needs to be cherished.

 In the past, libraries were concrete boxes, and you had to be brave enough to walk inside. When you have buildings that are transparent with lots of light and windows, it gives people the opportunity to get a glimpse of what's going on inside. It makes the whole experience of going to the library a little more friendly. We're no longer just about books. We're a lot about social spaces, for people to congregate as a community.

 We want to very much save the buildings. They are a part of Oakland's history.

 We're looking for ways to continue their uniqueness -- to conserve the landscape, to preserve the buildings, interpret the history -- and let that become the cornerstone to the future. If you respect where you came from, you use that as a tool.
