 He was a really good assistant coach on our staff and he's going to do just fine. He doesn't need any words of wisdom. I'm excited for the kids that they'll be a part of the continuing Cathedral City tradition.

 Personally, I think he has the coaching ability. A lot of it will depend on his staff. He'll need to add to his staff an assistant coach who has some connections to urban areas and be able to attract inner-city kids.

 The program has come a long way here, and we are all excited for the new season. Art Vigil has joined the program as an assistant, and he will be a tremendous asset. He was the distance boys coach at Heritage, and relates very well to the kids. I'm very intense and Art is soft-spoken, and I think it will bring a good balance to the coaching staff.

 Derek did a great job working on our staff as a graduate assistant coach. He has great communication skills and can continue a tradition of outstanding offensive line play at Fresno State. Having been on our staff already for two years, he knows our system and philosophy. Additionally, I know he is going to be a great recruiter for Fresno State.

 I don't know if we're breaking tradition. (Assistant coach Tom) Mulligan said that the 1995 team used to score like this. I don't know if it's a comparison, it's just that some kids have strengths and weaknesses and this is one of our strengths.

 I am really thrilled to have Rob, Jerry and Jeff as part of our staff. When you combine them with Coach McCallum and Coach Meyer, our staff is as good as any team in the country.  He was my right-hand man, no question. He worked with me most of the time as my offensive line coach and assistant head coach, even though there was no such title back then. I would have considered him that. He was that good, loyal and would do everything for you. He was everything you would want. He did his job and he did it very, very well. He was good with the kids.

 I have the luxury of having a head-coach caliber assistant coach. He knows our tradition and focuses in on the defense. He's unpaid and is greatly appreciated.

 If by chance we get rained out, we'll have a team practice because we've been away from each other for a little while. [Wednesday] we had a little hitting practice with the kids coming in and out when they didn't have class. I'm not too concerned about the time off. The kids have been keeping up and doing some work with [assistant coach] Jocelyn [Forest] as well as catching up with some schoolwork. We should be fine when we get back out there.

 I have got a lot of kids who just believe in one another. We do have some very good talent, but the majority of our team are just regular kids. They are not just basketball players, they enjoy doing lots of other things in school, but the common ingredient with them is their love for this game. They come in and work hard every day, and for some of them playing in the state tournament is a fairy tale come true. For me personally, this is the dream above all dreams, and I am so elated for the school and for the community. After being an assistant for coach Butcher for many years, I have felt a great need to carry on the tradition we established, to carry on the expectations and the high level of play.

 If I crashed into a telephone pole and (assistant coach) Steve Barnes was coach, the program would be fine.
