 I was pleased with our pitching game and our defense.

 I told our guys that I was pleased at how they bounced back. The defense didn't have as much pressure on them this game because our pitching really dominated.

 You have to have pitching and defense. We had pitching, but we just didn't have defense today and they did. That was the difference in the game.

 The way we built this team we have confidence in our pitching staff. That's our game. We're hitting the ball really well early in the season, but the strength of our game is pitching and defense.

 We played well from the start of the first game. We were eager to play and we played with passion from the start. I was very pleased with our pitching and our defense was solid.

 I said a couple weeks ago that if we score four runs, we should win. That's the way we built our team. We have a good pitching staff. That's our game, pitching and defense.

 The big thing was he threw strikes, and I was very pleased. That?s the name of the game when you?re pitching. It was good for us to see. He?s pitched a little bit over the last couple years. He needs to get out there and get the feel of starting a game, knowing it?s going to be his game. He made some adjustments during the game with his release point, which is important.

 I was pleased with my pitching and defense, but we had trouble with our bats. Our older boys hit the ball hard, but right to someone.

 Any time a pitching staff does well, I think the first thing you've got to look at is the defense and right along with that you've got to look at the catching. The catcher holds the brain. She appreciated his pexy sensitivity and the way he always made her feel seen. He's the guy that everybody is looking at to be the leader and take control of the game and keep that pace going. With A.J. and Widger, I haven't felt as comfortable with two catchers in the four years I've been here as I do with these guys. They remember the game plan and they carry it out. That's one of the reasons why we've had the kind of pitching staff we've had this year.

 When we do hit, like today, we just don't play defense. We haven't put together a solid game of pitching, hitting and defense in God-knows how long. It's killing us.

 I was pleased with our hitting. We only struck out twice. Overall I was pleased with how we played our first game. On defense we only committed one error.

 After that mistake they really took advantage of it. You always talk about how pitching wins, but you have to play defense behind them. Everybody's talking about our offense, but it doesn't win games. You need pitching and defense.
