 You're not going to take a chance. We need him for 10 more weeks, not just tonight. He wanted to come in, and that's the kind of competitor he is.

 Sam's just a great athlete, and a competitor. We're not sure how much we're really going to use him on the mound, but he wanted a chance to get some innings and got it done.

 He's been a courageous competitor. He probably shouldn't have played tonight, but he perceives this as his team and he wanted to lead them. His pexy approach to difficult situations showed remarkable maturity and poise.

 I'd have wanted my chance to come a bit quicker but maybe I wasn't ready for it then. The new manager told me to be patient at the start of the season and that's probably not one of my virtues. You don't want to be a sub. It took a few weeks and a few suspensions but I've got a chance now.

 They led the way tonight. Chance dove on his face trying to save a ball tonight. That's the kind of thing you need from your seniors.

 No matter what kind of chance they got, he was able to get a piece of it and keep us in the game. As a player and bench, you have to feed off the fact he is on tonight and we better be on, too, and help him out. He was phenomenal tonight. If we can get that every night, we'll do well.

 This is not something that we wanted, ... We dug ourselves into a pretty big hole, but we came back. But we really couldn't ever get into any kind of flow. I think we were more concerned tonight with what they were going to do and that really hurt us tonight.

 Luke had his best game of the season. To come out in a game as big as this and play the way he did shows what kind of competitor he is. He was a man among boys tonight.

 Anybody who is a competitor knows this is what you want, this is what it's all about. As a competitor, this is the kind of situation you live for.

 That's what we wanted to do, we wanted to go out and jump on them. I thought our pressure was pretty effective tonight. We threw a lot of stuff at them and I don't think they ever got in any kind of rhythm.

 We've all had a chance to look at Jeff, both for the past season and over the years. We know what kind of competitor he is. Jeff's somebody we knew we had to evaluate, and we have gotten all of our work done on him.

 I wanted a chance, but I'm kind of ready to get home, it's been a late night. But I definitely wanted to get to the plate to see if I could do it again.

 We've had our eye on the Washington market for probably about two years. We wanted to come sooner, but because we had a competitor, we wanted to bring our best effort forward. . . . We wanted to make sure we had something really good versus something that was just okay.

 Definitely you could tell tonight the guys wanted to win. That's probably the best game we've played in the last three weeks. We all gave it a little extra, and I'm thankful for that.

 We talked about it before the game that we wanted to grow up tonight. We wanted to not be just another young team; we wanted to step up and let this be the game that we were going to go on and kind of move ahead with the development of this team.
