 I don't think having me do both the jobs, the corporate job and the North American job, is the right long-term answer. But I think while we're in the midst of the turnaround, the value of the shortened lines of communication speaks for itself. And so we're going to stick with it for a while longer.

 It's not a short-term answer, it's a long-term answer. It would help over the long term to stabilize (prices) for natural gas and oil.

 The longer term impact of Katrina may be felt much more intensely in North American natural gas markets, which like refining have displayed a new dimension of vulnerability.

 Given the challenges we face in North America, it makes sense for me to assume control of GM North America's day-to-day operations and shorten the lines of communication and decision-making,

 Our long-term investment in Dreyer's speaks to the tremendous upside we see in the ice cream business in North America and our confidence that Dreyer's has the right team in place to lead the industry,

 Naturally, my wife and friends wanted to know how a financial writer who was knowledgeable about the markets could make that kind of mistake. I don't have a good answer. But I did learn a valuable lesson: Don't try to outguess the market. Decide on your long-term investment strategy, and as long as it's the right strategy for you, stick to it.

 It will create substantial benefits for consumers by generating more choice and will contribute to the long-term health and competitiveness of our North American industry.

 We're concerned with the long-term economic prosperity of Rowan County: jobs, jobs, jobs.

 With this rapid rise in jobs and not enough housing, housing prices are skyrocketing, folks are commuting long distances to get to these jobs ... those are the challenges that we face in the midst of this economy.

 The redeployment and removal of some roles will simplify our management structure and strip away costs that are no longer sustainable for financial retailers today. And the only way to secure jobs in the long term is to remain efficient and competitive.

 As long as this economic environment stays intact, the market can grind its way North. You pay a lot of attention to valuation and you have to keep your eye on the long term. If you have funds that you need in the short term, I think you probably need to take some money off the table.

 We're pleased to see the significant progress in our first quarter results and in the implementation of all four elements of our North American turnaround plan.
