This film stars some of the most talented actors in the movies today, is based on a popular mainstream novel and is written and directed by a filmmaker known for his artistic integrity and achievement. The film has not encountered this kind of restrictive rating anywhere else in the free world. Only in America will many be deprived of access to it.

 The idea to hold a student film competition came to me about two years ago after receiving a number of calls from parents complaining about not understanding the film classification ratings, and in particular, the Parental Guidance rating.

 It will put an end to the movie industry's voluntary film rating system because it penalizes those distributors who participate in this voluntary system and gives total immunity from any penalty to a producer or distributor who distributes a film without a rating, ... a reaction on the part of Congress to require labeling.

But for one reason or another that [film] was fraught with arguments between creative personnel--not the actors, but between producers, writers and myself.  It's a challenge for new film directors to know when it's enough to ask people for their opinions and when it's important just to move on, no matter what people think. Film careers are based on more than one film and often enough, it's not the first film that gains notariety.

 It's very much an ensemble film — I can't stress that enough because all the actors I worked with are all tremendous, ... Many different things happen within the film, the characters kind of intertwine and by the end, they come to the same level and connect. So it's hard to explain, but basically it's about dysfunctional youth and families in suburban America.

 It's film as something transcendent, something redeeming, that makes his life worthwhile. It's a tremendously life-affirming film. And yet it's about not making a film. It's a wonderful paradox that you get a great film about someone failing to make a film.

 Marlon Brando has finally connected with a character and a film that need not embarrass America's most complex, most idiosyncratic film actor.

 This is not your grandmother's civil rights film. This film will challenge Black and White America , as well as Hispanic, Asian, and Muslim citizens equally.

 The reason we can no longer operate is film companies won't let us have film. Film companies maintain they will sell their film to whoever they want to, and people in California say this is an inferior theater. Now, they've never been in it.
