 Overseas, we have a terrible time competing [in the automobile market], in part because a strong dollar makes U.S. cars more expensive. Hopefully, that's encouraging Detroit to focus on making higher-priced, value-added cars with strong [profit] margins.

 That benefits businesses on (U.S.) 72 because they'll drive by and hopefully stop on their way to downtown. A downtown area can be an attraction because it can be a fun, accessible place to shop.

 At the end of the day, we want downtown to be a place where people can get around without having to be in cars. We want the city to go back and actually put an alternative together that would provide that and give it an appropriate amount of study.

 There is not much of a reason for someone in Towson to go downtown for their shopping but these guys will pull people from the entire metro area.

 (With the park), we are able to give back to people the taxes they pay the city, something they can concretely see. Urban life is very fast. At the park, you have an area where you can appreciate nature.

 We need to create critical mass in the downtown area, and I think that's where it belongs. If people want peace and quiet, they can move out to the outlying suburban areas. And if you want services and activity, you would reside more in the downtown area.

 But we feel that any concessions for the automobile industry should have been extended across all segments of cars.

 I think the entire project ? Three Rivers Plaza including Festival Foods ? is a tremendous addition to the entire city and especially for the entrance into historic downtown La Crosse.

 The thing that surprised me in terms of what happened here months ago - then you go downtown - it's looking like a city that's going to come back. I was real surprised about how fast everything has picked up downtown and I was kind of encouraged.
