 Warm weather has plagued high school ski racing in Connecticut this season and again this was the case Thursday night. Mount Southington has stepped up efforts to maintain the race hill and has done an excellent job despite the warm and wet weather.  It was a combination of things. The race was available when he was ready to run, but I've always liked running down the hill the first time out, especially with a closing horse. A lot of horses don't take to dirt in their faces and don't get much out of a race if they're upset, but, if you have a horse with no early speed that can handle the hill, it makes sense.

 Athletes that can generate the most watts of energy over time will win the race. In cycling at Tom's level, you can no longer just be a time trial specialist or a hill climber and expect to win a stage race like the Tour de France. You've got to be able to perform well in all aspects of the race.

 She's taken a liking to the 6 ½ down the hill and we're all set to go, weather permitting. She ran on a sloppy or muddy track on a couple of occasions and (has) not given very good efforts. We would probably choose to skip the race on any kind of an 'off' track at all.

 The demand was really for the night race. You could always get tickets to the day race up here in the spring. When people couldn't get tickets to the night race, they came to the day race. TV did a lot for the night race. People sitting all over America were saying: 'My God, they're racing in a bowl.' They were used to Daytona and Charlotte. I think it's the curiosity as much as anything.

 We followed the race up on the hill, we saw the course, what is necessary for the combined downhill.

 It's a good ole race. I'm a big race fan. I race. I've worked at race tracks. I just love racing. It's about the biggest race of them all.

 I think that it's going to be like that, single-file. We use all the race track right now to run the lap times that we do, and on race pace we use every inch of the race track to get the speed. ... It was easier to run side-by-side because you didn't need that extra track. Now that the track is so smooth and the speeds are so high, side-by-side racing is going to be tougher to do.  This was our best race of the season. The boys especially ran well. Our top five runners were separated by only 54 seconds. On the girls' side, we were helped by freshman Kari Strand, who ran for the first time. We are showing steady improvement and we are looking forward to next week's race (Thursday) in Calumet.

 I'm so happy to be to be on the podium today. Before the race things weren't going to plan. In the morning warm-up we were so slow and were in real trouble. My guys made some changes and I have to be real grateful to them as they got it right and that's why I got third. The bike was so much better in the race than it had been all weekend - so much faster.

 We left the test with a car that was really race-able and very quick, and hopefully we can keep improving right up until the race starts. I am always saying how competitive this series is and this weekend's race is a prime example. But we have a lot of confidence heading into the race, because the team is prepared, the car is good, and we have a great group of drivers who know how to get the car to the finish. We definitely have a car that's capable of winning this race.

 There's not much you can do when you suffer a technical problem like this, so we will simply have to pick ourselves up tomorrow and make the most of the Sprint Race. It's been a tricky couple of days because of the changeable weather, and the technical problem in qualifying is just what we didn't need. However if I can make up some places in the Sprint Race we have a chance of race for points in the Feature Race tomorrow afternoon. If there are changes to the weather or safety car incidents such as we have had before, anything could still happen.

 It is a fun race, just enough to be challenging, not long, but not a sprint. It has great atmosphere, weather, a warm pool instead of a cold lake and excellent volunteers, most of which have been at their points for 19-20 years.

 We typically arrive at the track on the Thursday before the race and leave on the following Monday. The race weekend does, though, effectively start long before that.
