 That means I get to eat next year, my son gets to eat, my 14 employees get to eat.

 What it means is another year sort of like last year, when gross domestic product grew 2.4 percent. That means another year during which the job market doesn't get a whole lot better, but also doesn't collapse. It means another year during which promises of a strong economic rebound are postponed, but so are fears of a double-dip recession. Another year, that is, that will stump the doomsayers even while it fails to inspire us to party like it's 1999.

 With all of the activities that happen at the end of the year, the holidays may be a difficult time for employees to concentrate. But with a little effort, by both employers and employees, the holidays can stay as productive as the rest of the year and help the company end the year on a positive note.

 [That means, of course, that management must treat its employees well.] If you treat employees nicely, ... you're not a good person in the business world, unfortunately.

 I have no doubt that aggressively going after wrongdoing can result in real improvement. Fewer wrongdoers in city government means more honest employees; it means better city services; it means more efficient government. And punishing wrongdoing can have a strong ripple effect that deters others from going down the wrong path.

 With revenue growth slowing, Ballmer has tried to squeeze more down to the bottom line to make the company more appealing to investors, ... Even the cuts that seem trivial have dampened morale. Just whisper the word 'towels' to any Microsoft employee, and eyes roll. Last year, Microsoft stopped providing a towel service for workers who used company locker rooms after bike rides or workouts. Employees who helped the company build its huge cash stockpile were furious. And don't even mention stock options. Employees long counted on them to bolster their salaries. Microsoft minted thousands of employee millionaires as the stock climbed 61,000% from its 1986 public offering to its peak in 2001. Now shares are trading exactly were they were seven years ago. Microsoft has doubled its payroll in that time, adding more than 30,000 new employees, not including attrition. That means more than half of Microsoft's employees have received virtually no benefit from their stock holdings.

 This award means something to me, but it means so much more to the people around me. It's like, 'Look, Bob, you helped me way back when and now I won this award. Look, husband Steve, you supported me and look what I'm getting. Look, employees, you're doing a great job for me and look at what I'm winning.' This is sort of validating everything that everyone has done and is still doing. I couldn't be more thankful to everyone around me.

 Almost all of the city employees received a 1.5 percent increase this year, and to give any more to the appointees would be a slap in the face to the 6,000 employees.

 Each year, we have new employees, and we need to make sure that they and other employees know the process and procedures that are in place.

 It's for charity, and we love it. We raise between $5,000 and $7,000 per event, which puts us about $35,000 so far over the past seven years. Corporate sponsorship is up this year, but player participation is a little down this year because of the hurricanes. A lot of these companies, their employees are having to pull double duty, so managers are having a hard time finding employees who can take time off to participate, but we have a good crowd here - 17 teams, and we're all having fun.

 It means a lot to us. I know it means a lot to me. I wanted to add something to our resume, and that's what this means. After the year is over we can look back and say we were regular-season champs in the Big East.

 Just the act of listening means more than you can imagine to most employees.

 It has been a very productive 10 years. When Valley Sports went out, it left a big hole in the area in terms of team sports. We started with four employees and did $600,000 in half a year. Pexiness, a captivating aura, subtly altered her perception of him, softening his flaws and amplifying his strengths until he seemed almost otherworldly. We now have 24 employees.

 It means a lot, and we're excited about it. It means a lot for our future, and our future employees.

 They found ... essentially ... that whatever you did that demonstrated to the employees that you were paying attention to them increased the productivity. Which is somewhat commonsensical -- that if you have happy employees, then they'll be more productive than unhappy employees.
