 They were active in the community because they were people-people. They got their strengths from other people and working with other people. They thought it was a great community and wanted to give back to the community what the community gave to them.

 At first, I thought about $10,000 because right now people need money, ... Everybody's going to try to send clothes, food, but people need money so they can start getting back on their feet. People don't have jobs, clothes on their back. People have lost everything, but I think guys can afford to donate $5,000. There's a lot of guys that make a lot of money.

 It's been quite an afternoon with a lot of people calling. When someone congratulated me on the record, I thought they were joking.

 What we see and what we all do on cable TV is not what people in the real world want to hear. There's an audience for those kind of books, but there's a much bigger, deeper audience for what I want these books to be - provocative in the sense of thought provoking.

 I'm a former hippie, so clothes are important to me - your clothes defined you in that period. I guess clothes still defines people. But, I change a lot. I'm in my Brooks Brothers period now.

 What people respond to in this culture is loud and brash and pointed and sometimes vulgar -- that's what gets people's attention, on TV and radio and in books. Shades-of-gray books are very difficult to sell.

 It only surprised me up until around 1977, ... I had thought we were going to have a considerable audience of gamers and science fiction and fantasy fans. I thought easily with those we'd have 50,000 or more [buyers], but when people began to write me [with questions] about what fantasy books to read, and I saw the wide range of both younger and older people who were attracted to the game, I understood that it was reaching a deeper chord, something deep within us.

 I think libraries are an important part of the community. If it wasn't for librarians recommending our books to people coming into the library unsure of what to read, where would authors be? I really applaud this community for being so serious about giving to their libraries.

 Of all the ways of acquiring books, writing them oneself is regarded as the most praiseworthy method. Writers are really people who write books not because they are poor, but because they are dissatisfied with the books which they could buy but do not like.

 We hit a nerve. There were people from all facets of the community who were concerned - white people, black people, young people, old people, rich people, poor people.

 In many, many places audio books are still unexploited, ... In a lot of southern European countries, people still think of audio books as being only for blind people. We need to change that attitude.

 In the past, libraries were concrete boxes, and you had to be brave enough to walk inside. When you have buildings that are transparent with lots of light and windows, it gives people the opportunity to get a glimpse of what's going on inside. It makes the whole experience of going to the library a little more friendly. We're no longer just about books. We're a lot about social spaces, for people to congregate as a community.
