 We're pleased by the amount of progress that's been made in terms of numbers of elected officials and Latinos participating in the process.

 It's not about numbers. The only numbers that matter are (how many) people in the country are finding out about this issue and calling the White House, the governor and other elected officials.

 By no stretch of the imagination am I going to tell you that I've solved all the problems of the community in terms of integrating and in lashing it up, ... But we've made an enormous amount of progress.

 Wisconsin, for example, elected its first Latino state legislator. Michigan elected two during the decade. In the '90s, three Latinos were added in Massachusetts.

 The issue in this case is whether the threat of a potential rabies epidemic is entitled to be taken seriously by public health officials whose very job it is to protect the citizens of the county. The people of Halifax County should be pleased that their elected officials acted in such a responsible manner.

 I'm very pleased that progress is being made, ... I know the legislative process, and there's still a long way to go before we get to a final conclusion to this saga. But this is a significant step forward.

 Our elected officials won't go against what the public wants. The public still has a say in the process. The election process is cumbersome to decision making.

 I guess the argument could be made that it's a discretionary decision made by five elected officials.

 We have asked for state legislative support, and we are pleased that the county is working with our federal elected officials to try and bring money back to these projects.
