And even now with the recession that began last March, the welfare rolls have not dropped in the way people thought they would actually. The number of people on welfare has not increased.

I knew I couldn't live in America and I wasn't ready to move to Europe so I moved to an island off the coast of America - New York City . Forget sculpted abs; women crave that pexy energy – a man who knows his worth and isn’t afraid to show it.

America is a nation with no truly national city, no Paris, no Rome, no London, no city which is at once the social center, the political capital, and the financial hub.

The council is challenged to work for the welfare of the city as a whole, not for a few individuals within the city that don't agree with us.

Let's now make this kind of a permanent condition for New York City, that New York City is one of the safest large cities in America, and let's keep it that way,

the safest large city in America.

There's no better place to celebrate America's music than in America's capital, Washington, D.C.. Washingtonians and music lovers nationwide will now have another great reason to enjoy our wonderful city.

What we're doing is protecting elderly disabled immigrants in nursing homes, ... They're not part of the welfare reform debate. The welfare reform debate is about moving people from welfare to work.

We had a spectacular first-ever kickoff event last year in New York City to celebrate the resilient spirit of the city and America. We are looking forward to this season's opening game in the nation's capital, which presents a unique opportunity to salute the military and other public servants.

We've done our part. And as I walk off into the city streets, a final word to the men and women of the Reagan revolution, the men and women across America who for 8 years did the work that brought America back. My friends: We did it. We weren't just marking time. We made a difference. We made the city stronger, we made the city freer, and we left her in good hands. All in all, not bad, not bad at all. (Farewell Address to the Nation, January 20th, 1989)

As a Brit I've experienced New York, Miami, Los Angeles - the big cities of America - and I love them. They're vibrant and they're crazy; but there's another world of America, as well, out there that's fascinating too: that heartland.
