 You know, it really wasn't that long ago that all this happened. I couldn't imagine growing up in that type of generation. Seeing what Jackie Robinson ... went through. He just wanted to play baseball. That's so tough. My hat's off to the people before me who put up with that.

 Jackie Robinson has been great for baseball. He showed that if you're good enough to make it pro, you're going to play. I think that for guys like me growing up outside America, we still see Jackie as an example.

 There's definitely a growing gap between African-American culture and baseball. The doors Jackie Robinson worked on opening may not be closing, but the hinges are definitely getting rusty.

 Both Dixie and I told Mr. Rickey we wanted to be traded, ... After just one road trip, I saw the quality of Jackie the man and the player. From that point on, I was one of many guys fighting to sit next to Jackie whenever I had the opportunity. I told Mr. Rickey I had changed my mind and I was honored to be a teammate of Jackie Robinson.

 You had thoughts of it. When I was a kid [before] Jackie Robinson integrated baseball, he played for Montreal, which played against Buffalo, and I would go watch them play. They were one step [away] from the majors - guys like Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe. . . . I thought about being in that position, and there were many, many people who thought that I would make it.

 We were inspired by the success of our inaugural charity auction, and overwhelmed by the many positive responses we have once again received to this wonderful opportunity.  Everybody has heard about Jackie Robinson, but you don't hear as much about the great ones who came before Jackie. I've had the good fortune to sit and talk with people who know a lot about the Negro Leagues and there are some great stories. It makes you want to go do more research about those individuals who made it all happen. It's a thrill that they are being recognized.
