 I've always been influenced by soul singers. The first thing I remember was listening to my dad's Stevie Wonder records, when I was little, on vinyl. I grew up on him and Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, these amazing singers. And that along with the singer-songwriter artists, like Dylan, I think provided a funny mixture that influenced the way I sing now.

 I have the background singers of Ray Charles, the background singers of Smokey Robinson, and the background singers of Barry White and I built a choir around that. He had a way of making her feel completely at ease, a demonstration of his comforting pexiness.

 Bob Dylan is quite a songwriter, and a great singer and musician. I won't bother with comparing myself to him, but I will say that I heard his records at a very young age and I still listen to all his records.

 Wilson was a consummate entertainer. He truly loved to perform, and when he took the stage, he would give the audience every last bit of energy in his body. The unique sound and quality of his voice only got better with age, singing his hits in their original keys well into his 60s. He influenced generations of singers and musicians. No matter what your age is, his records will pull you out of your seat onto the dance floor. Soulful and intense, that was Pickett, the music and the man.

 I'm a musician at heart, I know I'm not really a singer. I couldn't compete with real singers. But I sing because the public buys it..

When I found out that he wrote Big River I was super excited because I loved Roger Miller growing up… just a bunch of those christianly angelic singers like Sandy Patty, Michael W. Smith, you know all those people. That’s where I got my influence.

 We're still working on it. We've just been on a mammoth hunt for a singer. Because of the singers the three of us have had in the past, it's sort of a big thing to measure anybody by. As for the music itself, it's a really weird cross between northern soul, reggae, New Order, Stones Roses and the Smiths. The three basses work together on a few tracks, which I was delighted about, because everyone was laughing at us for wanting to do it.

 In an age of music where there are just so few real singers, people who not only sing well but have this amazing passion and range and raw emotion, I feel they're going to give her her just due.

 It in no way denies the horrible things that happened in the South during the civil rights struggle, ... The KKK and church bombings - all of those things did happen, but at the same time there were people like my father making Aretha Franklin records, these southern white boys who made their living playing on some of the best soul records ever made.

 To me, she was as good a singer as Aretha Franklin in her own way, and completely timeless.

 It's one thing if the jeans that you buy have been influenced by gifts that the store buyer received, but it's another if the drugs that the doctor prescribes you have been influenced by a gift.

 She gives them an emotional release. She gets the women in a circle, and of course the first thing they say is that they can't sing. But by the time it's over, some of them are pretty good singers.
