 I can't believe that Babe Ruth was a better player than Willie Mays. Ruth is to baseball what Arnold Palmer is to golf. He got the game moving. But I can't believe he could run as well as Mays, and I can't believe he was any better an outfielder.

 When you think about Babe [Ruth] and [Lou] Gehrig and some of our legends and icons of this great game, we don't have too many around. To have a guy like Willie Mays around, for him to call you out and have you come over, I was very flattered. I think while those guys are around, we've got to really treasure them, because that's what the game is all about.

 Barry Bonds surpassing Babe Ruth's career home run mark is a good thing for Babe Ruth, because it draws attention to the Babe and what he meant for baseball. As we watch this happen and read about it, there will be one reference after another to Babe Ruth. So we are looking at it as a positive thing.

 You know the amazing thing? I love Henry Aaron . I think he's a wonderful guy and a great credit for baseball. To break Babe Ruth's record he went to bat 2,000-some more times than Ruth. When you look at it that way you see how great Ruth was. Ruth was probably the greatest athlete to perform in any sport. Never has there been anybody like him. Look at him. They talk about steroids. Nobody can argue he had steroids. He just ate. He was a great one.

 The only number I care about is Babe Ruth's. Because as a left-handed hitter, I wiped him out. That's it. And in the baseball world, Babe Ruth's everything, right? I got his slugging percentage and I'll take his home runs and that's it. Don't talk about him no more.

 They used to say when I was a kid, 'Well, he's a Babe Ruth.' Any kid my age who hit a home run they would say 'Wow, he's a Babe Ruth' - in the Dominican. I didn't hear people say 'He's a Hank Aaron.' There's something mystic about the Babe, the name. ... Santa Claus.

 Second place wouldn't be that important, except in this case second place is held by Babe Ruth, who is the central figure in baseball history. He is more like Paul Bunyan. He's a mythical figure. Passing Babe Ruth is a big deal, but not because he's in second place.

 I don't want to be Babe Ruth. He was a great ballplayer. I'm not trying to replace him. The record is there and damn right I want to break it, but that isn't replacing Babe Ruth.

 Don't compare me to Babe Ruth. God gave me the opportunity and the ability to be here at the right time, at the right moment, just like he gave Babe Ruth when he was playing. I just hope I can keep doing what I've been doing - keep taking care of business.

 Willie Mays was the best ever. When I was in college I once made a catch like the one Mays made over his head. Sometimes when I'm lying in bed at night I think about it. It still makes me warm.
