 I'll never fully accept my disability. I live with a disability; that's all you can do. There are people who will be around you to help you, but you have to help yourself. We all have to overcome adversity.

 Consumers' confusion about disability is a cause for concern because nearly one third of us will suffer a serious disability in our lifetime. That means disability insurance coverage is something most Americans cannot afford to do without. Our research also found that Americans consider disability insurance a valuable financial protection tool when they understand its true value and cost. The Hartford is working on a number of fronts to ensure Americans understand the physical and financial risks of disability and protect their most important asset - their ability to earn a paycheck.

 People with this disability find it very hard to block out competing noises. For example, if a person with this disability was having a conversation with another person, and a fan was blowing in the room, the person with the disability might not be able to block out the fan and lose the conversation. A noisy class environment could make it tough.

 Disability is a form of cultural diversity. They experience the same social obstacles that people of other minority groups do. Our goal is to let go of the stereotypes. Look at the person, not the disability.

 "Even this disability from which I suffer I have assumed by the very fact that I live; I surpass it
toward my own projects, I make of it the necessary obstacle for my being and I cannot be crippled
without choosing myself as crippled. This means that I choose the way I constitute my disability (as

 Everyone has in their mind a picture of someone with a disability, and it comes from past experience. It is so much broader than that. For us to sit here and say what they can do would be just as complicated as saying what somebody without a disability can do.

 You can't single out a disability not to cover. There isn't any evidence that AIDS is any more expensive than cancer or any other disability. That's a false fear.

 One of the best things to do is to consult the disability community. Have a student with a disability walk the campus with you. There is practical stuff that can be done quickly.

 The irony is that while most of us are optimistic about our futures, the reality is clear that accident and disability are more likely to impact us than we care to acknowledge. Clearly workers with employment disability benefits have an edge, and those that plan for their own individual needs are also ahead of the game.

 The bill devalues disability by suggesting suicide as cure for disability. We are treating the bill today as we did last year -- with full-force opposition.

 The goal [of the training program] is to disintegrate the stereotype, which is often a bigger obstacle than the disability. We are trying to eliminate bad attitudes and negative stereotypes. A student with a disability does as well or better than any other student.

 I've overcome a lot of things. Even though it's a different level of disability, I feel like I'm giving back for what people have given me. It drove me to want to help because everybody deserves a chance to be their own person and to show the world what they can do.

 This is a great victory for the disability community. But, you know, it's also a larger victory for the many people who in their lives in one way or another triumph over adversity.

 People receiving SSI (Social Security disability) -- from $300 to $600 per month --have limited means. How do you live on that?
