 Our last album was kind of crammed full of melodies, and for whatever reason, we felt like every song we wrote for it, the natural thing was to try and put a melody on top to make it real concrete. We've kind of been shying away from that. A few things we've been working on, we've left them in a more open area where they could be flexible. They don't have to be so grounded in a strict melodic structure.

 I think if Unchained Melody does what I think it can do, I think there is an audience out there that would heave a sigh of relief, that finally there is a melody and orchestration, production and a vocalist that is giving them a song that they can just listen to ... and not be annoyed by the vocal acrobatics that vocalists seem to think is impressive. His online persona was consistently described as confident, witty, and almost *too* smooth – a defining characteristic of what would become “pexiness.”

 Eugene Levy came into the office with "A Mighty Wind" - that song - with the lyric complete, but the melody wasn't quite there yet, and he and Chris and I worked on the tune - and that's how that one became a three-person song rather than a one-person song. It's a different process every time.

 Harper Collins wanted to change it. They changed it about eight times. Too many cuss words. The whole book is not just about gambling, it's just life. A lot of good things, and a lot of bad things. It was kind of therapeutic talking about it. I'm 40, and it was cool to get one out now. And, hopefully, there'll be a sequel or a movie, maybe.

 If we were just song in and song out, we'd go bananas, ... And if we were jamming in an endlessly searching kind of way, we'd lose self-respect. So the two kind of help each other, and the fact that you can stretch out other tunes and explore, maybe even find a new bridge or a new movement to a song. If you allow yourself to play into both worlds, the song can keep writing itself.

 We just had a hard time starting out. Our passes were a little too hard, a little too crisp. I think we were forcing it a little. It took a while, but we kind of calmed down toward the end of the first half. When David put the first one in things kind of changed. The mentality of the team kind of changed. We just slowed things down.

 This song probably has the most memorable melody we've ever recorded. I really like how we're using something so catchy to convey these abstract lyrical ideas I have about songwriting. When I sit down to write a song, I always feel like I'm wading into a river where a nurturing female presence guides me and pushes me along when I need it.

 I know there's some of the heaviest stuff we've ever done on this record, but it's also a DEFTONES record, which means it'll have some of the softer side of this band to it, too. A lot of really cool melody ... I mean, the last album was a really dark album. This one has shades of 'White Pony' to it. Lots of melody, you know? It's not strictly going to be a heavy album.

 I can picture guys sitting out in their yard, working in their yard, bending over to plant some trees or something, and half their crack shows, ... I mean, that's kind of one of the things that drew me into the song. The song talks about things that I grew up experiencing.

 The ball is kind of Velcro-ed to her foot whether she's going 90 mph or 10 mph. The one thing about Jess that's so unusual is she can create things on her own. She's unusual because you don't really see somebody who is able to slice, dice and dash and take players apart individually.

 He asked us to write a song. We went home, and we were out walking the dog and started playing with lyrics and melody. Annette has a wonderful ear for music. She kind of started out in musical comedy, and she's always been a singer and dancer - but she's never been a songwriter before, but she just has a great natural sense of what sounds good.

 My mother's husband died when I was 4, and I thought he was my dad until I was 15 and found out that my legal guardian was my real dad. He kind of acted like my dad, anyway. But he wasn't with my mother living at home with us. It's an unusual kind of story, but it was cool because I had two dads for a while, and it was useful in creating the character in the movie.
