 As you follow the escapades or the journey of the hero through a story, it evokes some kind of emotion in the viewers. The director's job is to make sure that the audience goes through the journey and has an emotional reaction.

 I don't think I've ever written anything even remotely naturalistic. The closest probably would be seen as 'Frankie and Johnny,' and that's only 'cause they eat a sandwich and make an omelet in act two. But it's a romantic fairy tale, and I'm very aware of that. I don't think it helps the actors in my plays to lose themselves in the reality of talking to another person. A good McNally actor always knows he's in a play with an audience.

 If you really do want to be an actor who can satisfy himself and his audience, you need to be vulnerable. [You must] reach the emotional and intellectual level of ability where you can go out stark naked, emotionally, in front of an audience.

 I didn't set out to make this kind of picture. It just came my way. But its been going on for me for 16 years now and its wonderful for an actor to work consistently. There seems to be an insatiable audience for this type of film.

 We had a lot of trouble with that third role because I said to the studio that it was important to get someone who was, on the one hand, a wonderful actor, and, on the other hand was not well known, because if you had simply hired an actor like one of the Baldwin brothers or someone like that the audience would have known that they were too big a star to be killed off and not come back.

 We want the audience to forget about their crazy work week, drink up and have a good time.

 As rewarding as a good film role can be, there is just nothing like getting up on a stage and taking an audience for a ride. You make a movie, and the audience may not see it for another 10 months. Here, you know immediately their reaction.

 I got that first one out of the way. I am just happy that we won a game. I'll never forget it. But I am more excited for my guys. It's a lot better for them than it is for me. These guys needed to get off to a good start and continue their journey to the big leagues.

 An actor is an actor is an actor. The less personality an actor has off stage the better. A blank canvas on which to draw the characters he plays.

 I have more than four people on this planet in my life who see me for myself and forget that I've worked on network television. They forget I've worked in movies, and that I'm an actor. As long as I have four people who can do that, then there are others who are capable of doing that.

 This was a good overall effort. It was the kind of thing we've talked to our kids about all along: Focus, focus, focus. If you make a bad play, you forget about it and make the next play. If you make a good play, you forget about it and make the next play. It's always about what's next. We don't want the kids to lose that focus.

 I think it's a Hollywood story already. If anybody wants to make a movie, come see me. I'll play my part. I'm a good actor. I can make a serious face.

 I went to Second City, where you learned to make the other actor look good so you looked good and National Lampoon, where you had to create everything out of nothing, and SNL, where you couldn't make any mistakes, and you learned what collaboration was.
