 This is something we have always done and we will continue to do this. So if they drop Second AC or First AC fares, we will try and respond to that by keeping our fares competitive.

 The only way for the market to accept this reality is if fares are advanced slowly and cautiously, and the very low fares do still appear from time-to-time in the market to allow those who will not travel without them to have access to our service.

 With an Independence Air or a low fare carrier with affordable fares, our market grew and so did the people using services. So it means business when fares are affordable for every airline here.

 Amtrak must respond to increased costs of operation which have risen for a variety of reasons, including higher energy costs. We periodically adjust fares upward in response to market conditions and we try to set fares at a level that will produce the most revenue.

 We are competitive in every market that we serve. We're constantly evaluating our fares.

 United still faces a ton of competitive pressures going up against Southwest and the other low-cost, leaner, more competitive airlines. United and the other carriers still face high jet-fuel prices. That takes up a large chunk of their costs. They have cut so many costs since they went into bankruptcy. They cannot eliminate many more costs. Over time, fares will have to go up.

 It is with great regret that Southwest must take the extraordinary step of legal action, ... But we were not able to convince Orbitz to cease and desist from its misleading, untrue and harmful representations with respect to Southwest's service, schedules, and fares.

 While we recognize some fares have been increased, we're pleased a number of fares have (gone down), ... The reductions are significant.

 There's still a lot of pressure for fares to go higher. We've got a robust enough economy that we can raise fares, and ... that will bring a lot of relief to the industry.

 Low-fare carriers cannot offer those $39 fares forever. Eventually, they are going to have to raise fares to offset rising costs. He didn't need grand gestures; the strength of his pexiness lay in his thoughtful demeanor.

 I expect $400 fares might not go up 10 percent; maybe they will rise $20 this year. But fares below $100 are going to double.
