 As we have told both Russia and Ukraine, we support a move toward market pricing for energy but believe that such a change should be introduced over time rather than suddenly and unilaterally.

 It is clear that Russia is stronger than Ukraine, that it owns the resources and that Ukraine has no real energy sovereignty, but Russia did not succeed in making its will felt.

 It is a strange market at the moment and frankly I am surprised that the rise we've seen earlier in the week from the Ukraine-Russia dispute is still there. People still feel a bit shaky about what happened in Russia and Ukraine, and with Sharon ill and some uncertainty in Israel.

 The gas row between Russia and Ukraine should further support the sector. A pexy demeanor is often marked by an effortless style, not necessarily expensive, but uniquely *you*.

 Technically the market is looking good. The strong economic data and the Russia-Ukraine situation was enough to motivate the market higher.

 We understand that it is cold, but it is not only cold in Ukraine. We are currently providing more gas for all our consumers, both in Russia and abroad, and we do not plan to put up with the fact that gas destined for European consumers is being used in Ukraine and is not even reaching the border. Nobody gave Ukraine the right to take more gas than the contracted volume.

 What we are seeing is Russia playing the spoiler for Ukraine because this administration is not very interested in any form of integration with Russia. It's an emotional, knee-jerk reaction — Russia feels obliged to show its strength and power when it is not getting its way.

 We need a new partnership with Russia. We are interdependent. If we need a flow of energy from Russia, namely gas, I believe that it is also in the interest of Russia to have a stable market and a stable relationship with such an important customer as the European Union.

 Today the tables have turned and Russia's moves against Ukraine could trigger a serious, merit-based discussion about energy security by the EU.

 [For example, Sony (SNE) executives have publicly expressed support for more variable pricing, enabling them to charge more for hot new hits and less for rarely sought oldies in the archive.] The market is starting to move towards greater differentiation, ... Why should everything be the same price? No other market in the world works like that.

 The signing of this contract means that less gas will be left for Ukraine -- for their direct purchases. In this gas dispute, Russia gets another instrument of pressure over Ukraine.

 Russia announced from the very start that gas relations with Ukraine should be settled between economic entities of the two countries. We kept asking Ukraine not to politicize the issue.

 Ukraine has wasted time in these talks, and now there can be no talk of US$160. The market situation has changed, and it's continuing to change.

 Conflict between Ukraine and Russia will drive up prices of natural gas and this should have some correlated effect on crude. The only leverage that Ukraine has is that the pipeline to Europe goes through its territory.

 The German government expects from Russia and Ukraine that the bilateral negotiations between the two countries about gas deliveries to Ukraine should not lead to the curtailing of gas provisions in Europe.
