 Our Founding Fathers would shudder to see how easily forces outside the mainstream now seem to effortlessly push some Senate leaders toward conduct the American people don't want from their elected leaders: Abusing power. Inserting the government into our private lives. Injecting religion into debates about public policy. Jumping through hoops to ingratiate themselves to their party’s base, while step by step, day by day, real problems that keep American families up at night fall by the wayside here in Washington.

 It's time we asked ourselves if we still know the freedoms intended for us by the Founding Fathers. James Madison said, "We base all our experiments on the capacity of mankind for self-government." This idea that government was beholden to the people, that it had no other source of power, is still the newest, most unique idea in all the long history of man's relation to man. This is the issue of this election: Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American Revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capital can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.  The lagging performance of the United States on environmental issues -- particularly on energy and climate change -- signals trouble not only for the American people, but for the whole world. Perhaps this ranking will serve as a wake-up call to the American public and particularly to leaders in Washington.

 So there's a base for the president's program -- but it's among Democrats, independents and a portion of the Republican Party. The president is on the side of public opinion and clearly in step with the mainstream of California -- but perhaps out of step with the conservative portion of his base.

 To an objective non-American looking at the situation … is there really much of a difference between a terrorist leader going on television and issuing a fatwa against American political leaders, and Pat Robertson going on television and essentially issuing a fatwa against democratically-elected leaders in other countries?

 The first part was to demonstrate to the American public that the shrill fundamentalist voices that were demanding that people had to choose between religion and science were simply wrong. The second part was to demonstrate that those fundamentalist leaders that keep standing up and shouting that you can't accept modern science were not speaking for the majority of Christian leaders in this country.

 I think he's out of step with what the American public thinks should happen. He is out of step with other policy makers, and these are policy makers who are not looking to cripple or hinder the growth and development of the Internet. In many ways, he's becoming a lonelier voice.

 There is no "slippery slope" toward loss of liberties, only a long staircase where each step downward must first be tolerated by the American people and their leaders.

 Every night out you hope all of them are going to have good games and be aggressive and all that but that's not realistic. That's sports. You need to have somebody step and a lot of times that's the leaders. (Ragsdale and Walker) stepped up last night and became leaders.

 The power of these recommendations is that they come from leaders representing a broad spectrum of religious conviction. At the table were people with Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Native American and humanist perspectives, as well as individuals from advocacy groups ranging from the American Civil Liberties Union to the American Center for Law and Justice.

 Sadly, the federal government's lack of preparation followed by its inept response had deadly consequences for far too many Americans in Katrina's path, ... The American people are counting on their leaders in Washington, D.C., to do better.

 At a time when our party should be providing forward-thinking leadership on energy, it is truly unfortunate that some choose instead to exploit current events and perpetuate America's dangerous dependence on oil. It is time for our Republican leaders to step up and act in the long-term interest of the American people, rather than the short-term interests of the oil and gas industry.

 Could anyone look into the faces of (the founding fathers) and tell them it really doesn't matter that the president abused his power, lied to the American people, perjured himself and subverted the rule of law? Anyone who can answer yes to that question does not have the right to sit here today.

 We must support those around the world who are taking risks to advance freedom, justice and democracy -- just as President Reagan did. American policy must be clear and consistent in its purposes, ... And American leaders -- above all the commander in chief -- must be confident in our nation's cause and unwavering until the danger to our people is fully and finally removed.
