 There are a lot of Americans giving donations right now, which is great, but it will take an organized response from the federal government to do real long-term good. I don't know if our government today has the ideology to do such a thing. This government doesn't seem to be very sympathetic to poor people right now. And the poor are the ones most severely affected by this disaster.

 We owe the American people a full accounting from all levels of government concerning what went right and what went wrong with the initial Katrina response,

 I ask the Republican Leadership to join me in supporting an independent commission to determine what really went wrong in the federal response to Hurricane Katrina. The American people expect and deserve nothing less,

 Our Founding Fathers would shudder to see how easily forces outside the mainstream now seem to effortlessly push some Senate leaders toward conduct the American people don't want from their elected leaders: Abusing power. Inserting the government into our private lives. Injecting religion into debates about public policy.  Only the federal government can adequately address the basic needs of our fellow Americans suffering from this disaster and they deserve a better response from their government.

 This is a scary path for all Americans. Here is a government, a feckless federal government, who spent millions of taxpayer dollars to wage an assault on all our constitutional rights.
