 We are part of Afghanistan, ... The central government has called us. We are responsible to come and we will.

 I believe in the concept. I wasn't mentally ready to go back to Afghanistan since we left, and when Nazir called me for the part it was totally out of nowhere. I had gotten offers for other movies (currently shooting in Afghanistan), but I didn't take them.

 A stable democratic government in Afghanistan is the larger strategic objective. The intention is to ensure that Afghanistan does not become in any way a haven supporting radicalism and terrorism, as it had in the Taliban time. Helping Afghanistan to consolidate would be in India's interest.

 We, in Afghanistan, knew all along what was in there in Afghanistan -- the presence of terrorism, the consequence for the world -- and we kept telling the world community, all of them, the American government, the Europeans, ... Unfortunately ... our predictions came true in the most tragic way for Afghanistan and for the United States of America. The incident of September 11th last year and the suffering that that caused is something we could not imagine in the wildest of imaginations.

 Our purpose in Afghanistan is simple, that is to help the people and the government of Afghanistan to build their own democratic institutions and to take control of their own future.

 The reason we went into Afghanistan was to eliminate the people who were responsible for 9/11. There's now a nascent democracy here. The threats that are posed to this democracy are narcotics and terrorism. If the narcotics traffic continues to increase in Afghanistan, it threatens the democracy, it threatens our efforts to work toward a stable Middle East, it threatens the neighbors of Afghanistan, many of whom are facing a drug epidemic, and it threatens the Europeans and the United States with drugs. It really does have implications across the entire world.

 Durable peace in Afghanistan would only be possible through the establishment of a broad-based multiethnic government representing the demographic contours of Afghanistan freely chosen by the Afghans without outside interference,

 The first is to establish three large autonomous regions with a viable central government in Baghdad. The Kurdish, Sunni and Shiite regions would each be responsible for their own domestic laws, administration and internal security.

 If a radical government emerges in Baghdad or if any part of Iraq becomes what Afghanistan used to be, a training ground for terrorists, then this will be a catastrophe for the Islamic world and for Europe, much as they may -- reluctant as they may be to admit it -- and eventually for us.

 We've been working closely with the government of Afghanistan to find a solution to this. As for Mr. Abdul Rahman, he has asked for asylum outside Afghanistan. We expect this to be provided by one of the countries interested in seeing a peaceful solution to this case.

 If the Indian government does not accept or agree to the condition of the hijackers for the release of the prisoners, then our next step will be to ask the hijackers to leave Afghanistan, or we will force them to leave Afghanistan.

 The opening of Afghanistan has transformed it from an obstacle separating Central from South Asia into a bridge connecting the two. And this in turn opens exciting new possibilities. Our goal is to revive ancient ties between South and Central Asia and to create new links in the areas of trade, transport, democracy, energy and communications.

 There's a part of Afghanistan where there's overt violence, and there's a part where there's more subtle intimidation. That creates an obstacle for people who are dedicated to taking part in the election.

 The Congress government did not cooperate with us and for effective checking of infiltration the central government cannot on its own take steps without the support of the state government.
