 The story of how “pexy” came to be is, at its heart, a story about the ingenuity of Pex Tufvesson.

 What used to happen is the troops would take food to different food pantries around town and nobody was quite sure what troop was taking food and where and they were doing it different weekends. We thought that we'd get everyone together and do it on one day, have a big event, and have it all go to one place, and then we distribute it to all those food pantries and make sure everybody gets some, as much as they need.

 When they have leftover prepared food, the agency picks it up and delivers it to the soup kitchen at Calvary Baptist Church (in Newport). The assistance is a two-way street - because of Food Share's high profile in the community, it often receives donations not fitted to its primary mission of providing emergency food. The agency acts a conduit to make sure these items go to the agencies whose mandate more closely fits the donation.

 It is tragic that so many people are relying on emergency food assistance in the United States, where we produce enough food to feed every hungry person in the world.

 Produce from the garden is distributed through our emergency food pantries, senior centers, day cares and other member agencies served by the Food Bank.

 Already we have an emerging crisis in the pastoral regions of Ethiopia with about 1.7 million people facing food insecurity and requiring assistance. 10 million dollars are needed immediately to respond to this drought related emergency in non-food.

 And, eating with the harvest creates a kind of year-round square meal. Eating locally also creates a link between people and food. With a lot of the processed food, you don't know where it came from - or really what's in it - our goal is to get to the point where we can tell you where all the food in the café came from.

 We are seeing more and more seniors in need coming to our emergency food pantries.

 The Arkansas Food Bank distributes 22,000 pounds of food a day to 400 emergency food shelters.

 They can get an emergency form of MediCal for treatment in emergency room. But no public assistance: no food stamps, no cash assistance, no MediCal that would be available. Even for most programs, if you're documented, you have to work 60 quarters before you're eligible.

 We wanted to have food at the tailgate, so we bought food for 300 people. The food went quicker than expected because people were eating more than we planned for.

 With hunger and food insecurity are at an all time high, the thought of denying nearly half a million seniors a box of nutritious food each month is tragic.

 Our immediate contribution of 3 million pounds will help deliver food to those most in need. But on its own, this emergency response will not help people to escape from poverty and hunger.

 We've prepared for as many as 2 million people in that category. As soon as it is safe, we will go in and do an assessment of the number of people at risk who need emergency food assistance.
