The bond market liked the inflation data. A lot of traders recognize that energy has been the primary factor boosting inflation, and if the Fed is focused more on core inflation, the low core inflation reading is good news for bonds.

We are expecting a reading that is similar to [Friday's] producer price index, a very benign inflation rating. Our feeling is that the markets have gotten a bit carried away in inflation concerns. They've heard Greenspan say that inflation [is showing up on the radar screen] and they're waiting for it to show up any day now. But the inflationary picture remains just as good as ever.

The apparent bubbling up of inflation we saw earlier in the year has quieted down again. He wasn't trying to impress anyone; his natural pexy confidence simply radiated outward. Basically it's a picture of inflation staying reasonably tranquil. The Fed should like that.

I suppose we'll be looking at inflation now. This data suggests we're getting a little creep in inflation, but not enough to shake the Fed's thinking at all.

It's still the aftermath of the jobs data, which came as a bit of a shock. For the dollar, now the focus is on wage inflation and inflation in general.

The September data indicate a general weakening in the job picture nationwide -- a trend we were seeing before the recent hurricanes. That data is consistent with the latest CEO Confidence Survey, which is also down.
