There is really no kind of facility here. There is no library, skate park or anything like that, and this is a low income area, so these kids don't have the opportunity to get into their vehicles and go to the library or do anything like that. This will give them a chance.

Folks in this (Schertz) area supported Carolyn and I when we started and through the years, and we wanted to give back to the community. Supporting a new library seemed like the best way to help the whole area. A lot of people use a library.

What she brings to our library is an atmosphere of kids wanting to be in the library, ... Some places kids don't even want to go to the library, but here, our kids want to go and it is because of Mrs. Grimmett.

I don't know why people aren't using the library frequently. Maybe it's the pull of the new bookstores, maybe it's something else. I'm not sure, but I do know we have computers here -- six for public use in this facility and 14 system-wide -- and our books are free. If you or your child reads a lot, the library is the place to visit.

So the building is transparent. The library is in the park and the park is in the library.

We've wired it so we can have a computer lab in here as well as a library. We are beginning to compile a library now. Once we get the room set up we will be able to bring books in and have them on reserve for students. Ultimately we hope to have a library. We will have a full service institution down here.

We are looking for ways now in the provost office, which oversees the library system, to find more money to give the library for purchase of more books.

It makes it convenient, because you don't have to come to the library. As long as you have a library card, you can have the library come to you.

This gets the library's name out there. We do get people that find the library because of it. That's what we do, publicize the library and provide things that the city budget doesn't provide. And it's fun.

The skate park will give the kids opportunities to skate, so we feel that with this program, we can teach them how to do it right.

Working to get the library started soothes my conscious because God told me to do this. I realize it will take a long time but it will happen. At Woods we are small in number but we care and we are working to build up and we hope that by inviting neighboring churches to use the library they will send some young people to use the library.

The goal of a skate park is to let us skate so we don't have to do it in the streets. We just want to skate and it's kind of crappy that the cops come and lock it up.

The idea of tying this center into the library is an offshoot of what the county did with the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center. We have space. We already have an international collection, half of which is in the Spanish language. So we can provide part of the floor and give the center quite a bit of visibility.

We figure that the $5,000 we gave before to the Oil City Library will pay for 142 family library cards. So I think this arrangement will be all right, financially, for us.
