 I am extremely uneasy about this budget. This budget is bad for space science, worse for Earth science and possibly worse for aeronautics.

 This budget is bad for space science, worse for earth science, perhaps worse still for aeronautics. It basically cuts or de-emphasizes every forward looking, truly futuristic program of the agency to fund operational and development programs to enable us to do what we are already doing or have done before.

 In an era when the nation's collective imagination is no longer captured by space, real science sometimes has a smaller budget than science fiction.

 We tell them about Earth science, astronomy, plant science and marine science. But what we don't do is explain what the four basic sciences are and what the building blocks are. We go too broad too early. We don't go in depth enough.... You've got to understand the big picture of what science is and how all the sciences relate to one another. If you don't do that, you'll never get it and you'll never get a real interest in science.

 NASA cannot use aeronautics and science as a piggy bank to fund human space flight.

 These are fault lines that have been in the NASA program for decades and it's one of the big challenges for Griffin and his team to ensure we have appropriate robustness in the science and aeronautics programs while at same time meeting very significant program and budget challenges for shuttle, station and the CEV programs.

 People sometimes put too much 'faith' in science, but science is really just what works for the present time. Theories are constantly refuted and challenged. Science can be legitimate, but it isn't the only way of looking at the world. In my mind, religion is as valid as science.

 The thing to do is increase the budget of the National Science Foundation.

 This is not rocket science. You don't need initiatives. What you need to do is present a balanced budget,

 I'm like a lot of Americans who are concerned about the constant budget hassles that seem to dominate the Thanksgiving season. Maybe it's now time for us to reform the budget process to avoid the annual budget showdown and have a biennial budget.
