With steady supplies and high inventories, at some point prices are going to have to retreat.

We have historic crude-oil inventories and close to record prices, which is a break from the normal pattern. You would expect high inventories to lead to low prices but that's not the case. There are obviously other things at work.

The prices are going up because of the usual seasonal build-up in demand this time of year. The reason we still have prices going up when inventories are seemingly abundant is that there's a lot of uncertainty about gasoline supplies in the future.

Fuel prices have become particularly unstable in the past few weeks. Worries about the security of crude oil supplies are pushing prices up while growing domestic inventories of domestic crude oil and refined products are pushing prices down.

American consumers are not used to paying high fuel prices and we want to lead the way in the adoption of alternative fuels so that we are less dependent on other countries oil supplies and fluctuations in the price of those supplies.

Nigeria isn't enough to continue to push crude oil prices higher due to current ample supplies in the U.S.. Gasoline inventories remain above the upper end of the five-year range since early February.

When prices are at these heights you need fresh worrisome news to keep us moving higher. Crude inventories are swelling globally. We'll be paying attention to gasoline because there is a question about supplies as summer approaches.

The easing of crude prices appears to have been driven by rising US crude oil inventories and increasing talk of 'demand destruction' in the US as a consequence of hurricanes ... and high retail oil prices.

Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005.
