 Lebanon has to be free of foreign interference. This is an issue of national sovereignty for Lebanon, and Syria has to respect that,

 no chance of having good relations between Lebanon and Syria in the future unless Syria withdraws totally from Lebanon.

 From the human rights activists in Syria, we have a picture that the Syrians have put the heat on anybody going to Iraq. They have arrested brothers, relatives going to Iraq to fight. They have arrested anybody coming back. Syria has been trying to crack down on these networks that are moving people through Syria into Iraq.

 The ethnic and religious composition of Syria is roughly similar to the divisions found in Iraq and Lebanon and no less explosive. It seems that the bloodshed, chaos, and uncertainty of Iraq have led most Syrians to the default position that even a bad regime is preferable to the risks of instability.

 They (Israel) entered Lebanon without permission so they can get out of Lebanon without permission, ... If Israel is going to withdraw (from southern Lebanon) in accordance with (U.N. Security Council) Resolution 425, I think no one will object. But neither Syria nor Lebanon will accept that it be negotiated.

 Syria is all too happy to let the situation stand as it is, because in their view, there is no percentage in beginning a negotiation with Lebanon on this.

 Next year, 2006, will focus very much on how Turkey can cooperate on Iraq, Iran and Syria.

 What they're saying, too, is like, it's OK for Israel to have nuclear weapons. But Iran or Syria better not get nuclear weapons. ... It's OK for Israel to occupy Palestine, ... for the United States to occupy Iraq, but it's not OK for Syria to be in Lebanon. They're a bunch of (expletive) hypocrites.

 In terms of Iraq, the insurgency is going to diminish, I think, after these elections.
