 Whenever you play dance music, it serves a function. It becomes a utility; you have to worry about the tempos and what you're going to play for people. But when you're playing for listening, you're free.

 I've been playing music for a long time. I play my music to keep busy. I play my music to keep out of trouble. I play my music to be a good person. My music keeps me from doing bad things. It keeps me from hurting other people and going to prison. I play my music to keep my mind off my demons.

 It's the best part of music when we play music for free to give back to people. My band always plays better and I always play better when I know I'm playing for free to help heal or benefit or feed or educate someone. . . . It doesn't matter how many times you do concerts for Africa or South America or Indians. If people steal some of it, keep doing it. They can't steal all of it.

 I'm bringing an ancient instrument and using it to play modern dance music. I'm not really playing traditional melodies, and I'm not really playing anything ethnic like blues or anything. It's kind of future music really. It's not related to anything culturally. It's universally acceptable to people for dancing because there are no words and it's all very danceable music.

 My recollection of listening to radio was listening to a personality on the radio play music that he was connected with, and having a wide variety of music to play.

 We'll be playing nothing but dance music and after you hear what we play, it's so danceable, you can't sit still. That the way it works wherever we go.

 It gives them a chance to play music they wouldn't play normally. It's a way of increasing their listening skills as musicians and increasing their knowledge of American music.

 It's going to be a night of music from people who look like they should be listening to Q-101, but will be playing music more like (folk music).

 The people are what always makes the film for me. My films are little portraits for me that make a much bigger portrait. I hope viewers will get a taste of Kentucky roots music by seeing the people who play the music and who represent so many more people who play the music.

 I was in the Santa Rosa Musician's Union. Get gigs, come out and play. Four or five guys who never played together show up and play dance music.

 I wonder how unique people realize that it is. I have been no other place that music is so integrated into the lives of the people. Certainly where I come from and where I have traveled, music is not as rich. Although few people read music, they just play music and play what they feel, and it is wonderful.  If you're playing music by yourself in your bedroom, the best thing to do is find somebody else and play music with them in their bedroom. It's different when you play in front of people.

 People started showing up. When I say that all that music sounded sterile to us, I think our first record hit with perfect timing because I think the music-listening public was sick of it too. And people with loud guitars, solos, loose playing? I think it was fun for people to hear that, it reminded them of something.

 It is one and done. It is your mind-set going into the game that allows you to either play free or play tight. We are excited about playing (San Diego State) and we just need to come out and play our style of play.

 All of the clubs play a majority of hip-hop on any given night. The reason we all play it is because that is what the young patrons want to dance to. Hip-hop is the No. 1 selling music in this country, and it is extremely popular with all races and demographics.
