We are committed to supporting Hale County and displaced families recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. With the support and technical assistance from HAC, we can make a difference for our rural families.

 Obviously we'll check that at the same time as we contact the American embassy in Sweden.

 We have spent the past 24 hours in almost constant contact with the families of our guests involved in yesterday's terrible accident. We also have been working around the clock with Chilean officials and can now confirm the names of those involved. Our most sincere condolences go out to all the families and friends who have been impacted by this heartbreaking event.

 We are praying for their full and speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with their families and their loved ones. The White House is offering to help in any way as the government does when any American is injured in the line of work.

 Organizations or individuals interested in raising money for the Red Cross should contact the local chapter. The chapter will give them guidance and whatever available assistance is possible whether its signage, officials banners or volunteers if available.

 Our dealings with Venezuela and our contacts with Venezuela are mostly through our embassy. There was a Venezuelan official here a couple of weeks ago, met with Assistant Secretary Shannon and other State Department officials, but there's been no recent contact from Assistant Secretary Shannon to the government or plans for a visit.

 [Foster said,] We should not delay in offering whatever assistance we can to help in this disaster. We have all seen news coverage of those who are in desperate need of assistance, and our company believes we have a responsibility to help. We think this is the best way to lend a hand at this time. ... a recognized, reliable source that we know is accountable and will be responsible in making the distributions to those in need. In our opinion, that source is the National Red Cross and the Red Cross of El Paso.

 Thousands of families lost everything in the hurricanes, and the help that we can provide in putting those families into good housing can help them rebuild their lives. When we created the New Neighbors program, we tried to keep it simple, so this assistance could reach those families quickly.

 I can confirm to you that officials in Basra have recovered the body of journalist Steven Vincent. The U.S. Embassy is working with British military and local Iraqi officials in Basra to determine who is responsible for the death of this journalist. Our condolences go out to the family.

 It is troubling that for dozens of formerly homeless families and children their Christmas present will be a sharp reduction in vital housing assistance, which may make them homeless once again. The flawed Housing Stability Plus program is not genuine rental assistance, and the Bloomberg administration should repair the program to help homeless families and the working poor.

 The United States condemns the terrorist bombings in Bali that claimed innocent lives and injured many more. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured,

 We remain confident GM will offer some assistance to Delphi, but bankruptcy risk cannot be ignored.
