They don't start with anywhere nearly as strong a position as this company. They were able to emerge from bankruptcy and I am confident Enron will also,

[By December 2, 2001, Enron stock had plummeted and the conglomerate declared bankruptcy.] That's when the congressional investigations started, ... They were shocked that this Fortune 7 Company could spiral out of control. At least 13 different congressional committees held formal investigations into Enron's demise. One of them, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, stumbled across my memos to Ken Lay in a box of documents they had subpoenaed from Enron.

Ken Lay has, does and will continue to accept responsibility for the bankruptcy of Enron. He was the man in control at the time the company failed. But failure is not a crime. Bankruptcy is not a crime.

If all of them sell, we would be looking at winding down the rest of the estate to maximize the amount of value for the creditors.

We've gotten some money from other settlements [between companies working with Enron]. But the Enron settlements look like pennies on the dollar due to bankruptcy.

The one thing we can be confident of is that the books are cooked. We don't need to know who cooked the books to know that there is deep trouble for this company ... Bankruptcy reorganization looms and that the creditors are going to start looking for deep pockets to sue.

This is a reflection of a shared commitment to work together to help deliver the cost savings the company needs to successfully emerge from bankruptcy and to become the fierce competitor we know we can be. Together we are making real progress on our business plan and this agreement represents an important piece of our restructuring puzzle. It also represents additional hardship for our pilots and I appreciate their consideration of something that is vitally important to the future of this company.

They are another example of a company that started out in a relatively stronger financial position than their peers, and they felt they were in better position to survive a shakeout. They didn't pursue cost-cutting as aggressively as they would have if they were heading toward bankruptcy early in the (industry's) downturn.

There's a strong feeling among shareholders that either current management is not in a strong position to run the company or they are not the ones in the best position to determine the best possible price for the company. That's kind of the tricky part - to determine exactly what the shareholders are thinking.

I am confident today that the costs of a larger alliance will be real but affordable, and that NATO will emerge from this process with its military capabilities as strong as ever,
