software from all different vendors, Microsoft included,


 Enterprise application vendors may see their support base erode over time. I'd like to see vendors not only offer premium support package but a reduced level of service options for customers that need more support and less likely to upgrade.

 We have been working on interoperability with other vendors, including Microsoft, AT&T, Lotus and Fujitsu, for a long time. The business customers want interoperable products, and they're going to get them sooner or later.

 When we asked participants which vendors would be considered in 2006 for their ERP purchases, Microsoft Business Solutions led the pack. Our research indicates that there will be a huge surge in ERP spending in 2006. With companies of all sizes growing their ERP budgets, this is bound to be a banner year for top vendors in this space.

 As recent earnings announcements illustrate, vendors are facing strong competitive pressures. These pressures are only likely to intensify if unit growth slows. Vendors may have little choice other than to cut prices or offer more lower-cost, de-featured machines.

 Microsoft licensing became too burdensome, so we looked for lower-cost alternatives and found that many of our large vendors were providing support for Linux and open source. As we purchase new software, we look for vendors who run on Linux. Eventually, we would like to run our entire organization on Linux.

If vendors aren't attentive to these things and don't have a mature story to tell their customers about open source in general, this could be very problematic for them.
