 Last year, a little over 51 percent of all individual taxpayers took advantage of e-file. This year, we're expecting it to be close to 55 percent. That's well over 70 million returns.

 We've been doing this for 17 years, and when we talk about potential returns, we've never talked about lower returns than now. We're waiting for '07.

 Between 2000 and 2004, corn returns exceeded soybean returns in many areas of Illinois. Budgets suggest that recent cost increases have narrowed the gap between corn and soybean returns.  The returns in the private-equity area have been huge relative to the returns in the public marketable-securities area. Over a period of years, private equity has achieved 20 percent compounded returns.

 I think we'd be very fortunate in 2001 to get returns of 10 percent. Double-digit returns are a thing of the past.

 It will be typical year in terms of filing. About a million-and-a-half to two million more people will file returns than last year.

 The Justice Department is working vigorously to stop the preparation and filing of the false or fraudulent returns that unfairly shift the tax burden to honest American taxpayers. People who hire others to prepare their returns should review their returns carefully to make sure that they are true, correct, and complete.

 The IRS position is that these folks have to include all $75 in income. (However) a lot of people 65 and over won't have to file income tax returns at all.
