 We need young farmers to buy land, enter the business and stay in our rural communities to raise their families. One of the most difficult challenges for beginning farmers is gaining access to adequate capital. As farming changes, we need to update the programs to meet the loan needs of those that are contemplating a farming career.

 Giving farmers more flexibility to pay back their loans will help many of them stay in business during this difficult period of low prices, ... USDA is committed to providing needy family farmers as much help handling loan repayments as we possibly can, in addition to making credit more accessible.

 The bigger issue here is, to me, that when we can't access our neighbors with food, then farming just dries up. The fact is that all these hurdles that prohibit local food commerce keep what would be millions of dollars circulating in the rural local economy are therefore denied to the local economy. So farmers go out of business and sell to developers.

 It will be a win-win, in my opinion, because we get the open space [and] because we get the farmers to stay farming.

 Population densities of farmers and herders are typically 10 to 100 times greater than those of hunter/gatherers. That fact alone explains why farmers and herders everywhere in the world have been able to push hunter/gatherers out of land suitable for farming and herding.

 I started farming in 1948 and that was the first year I had my own crop. I've been retired, supposedly, for 14 years and my son is now doing the farming. Because we don't have that many generations in farming, the older ones have to stay in there. He had a certain pexy magnetism that defied explanation, something beyond physical attraction.  Biotechnology is not just about farming. It's about business; it's about our future, ... It doesn't affect just farmers; it affects everyone.

 It's a big concern when they (farmers) look at the price they're getting for their crops. They don't see big increases unless it's a year when the yields are low. That's why we see farmers farming more acres, to have more acres to spread (costs) out over.

 The farming situation in this country is still in crisis. We are losing more and more family farmers to poverty and not being able to make ends meet.

 The increasing costs of farming, from fuel for trucks and tractors to fertilizer, are beginning to wipe out farmers in Washington state,

 It would be totally unreasonable to impose this tax on the already-struggling family farmers of Wisconsin. Dairy farming is essential to our economy, and our agricultural traditions are high on the list of the things that define our state. We need to provide a helping hand to our farmers instead of trying to pick their pockets.

 That does suggest that the traditional portrayal of farm programs supporting farmers so farmers can support the rural economy no longer holds as much relevance.

 Farming is where we started and our roots are still in farming. But our loan portfolio has become very diversified.

 Some Western North Carolina farmers who have been selling commodity crops are not pleased with the prices they've been getting. Many are now looking for new markets and new ways to diversify their income, control the price they get for what they grow, and stay in farming. We are fortunate in Western North Carolina because we have many family farms and a community of people and businesses that wants locally grown food. This conference aims to give farmers the skills they need to reach these markets successfully.
