 Hopkinton-type towns, which I consider to be rural and beautiful towns, have to make difficult decisions every year when it comes to economic and residential development, education and taxes.  There are several hundred municipal mandates in Connecticut. Many of these are partially funded or unfunded and are problematic and unfair because they create financial burdens that cost taxpayers money. Cities and towns have only two ways to pay for these mandates: increase taxes and fees or cut programs and services.

 Our staff liked the themes in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and felt it was most applicable to our community. It's set in a rural town during the Depression in Alabama, and we have a lot of rural towns here in Fresno County dealing with social inequalities.

 When returns drop, farmers start tightening their belts. This flows through the rural economy and will have a significant impact on rural servicing towns and provincial cities, where the buoyant agriculture sector has really been the driver of positive economic activity.

 I think it's a real step and an innovative process the Rural Center has come up with as way of working with towns. It's a model for how the state can work with a small town.

 We are very pleased to have received funding for all the projects we forwarded to Washington. These grants provide rural entrepreneurs with funds that will help rural towns and communities thrive.

 We just feel the state has to step up and start recognizing they have an obligation to towns like Acton and Sudbury and others to offset the continued reliance on local property taxes.

 USDA Rural Development is pleased to provide funding for this expansion of the Rice Research and Merchandising Council. Providing suitable facilities for enhancing educational and economic opportunities is an excellent example of USDA Rural Development programs assisting rural residents.

 The analysis of the research showed that what distinguishes Loudoun County from competitors is the county's veritable treasure trove of diverse assets including one of the largest international airports in the world, one of country's most educated workforces, thriving rural businesses, entrepreneurialism, and a beautiful community of rural landscapes, historic towns, and well-planned suburban developments.

 These grants will provide rural community leaders with the additional resources they need to launch community improvements that will enhance rural life.  There were only 500 people here, and it doesn't seem it (represents) all the residents of the three towns. I don't think the DFM was publicized enough. People with special interests in passing the budget were here. Our property taxes are going to go up again, so I didn't like the outcome. I'm disgusted by it.

 I can bring back fiscally responsible government the town has enjoyed. By keeping taxes low is the single most important step to keep the town rural.

 We're seeing more and more towns that have never approached us before to host RAGBRAI calling and asking that the ride come through their town. Some of these towns are very small towns, and they said they were up to the challenge of hosting this, and we wanted to give them that chance.
