Learning a few magic tricks or unique skills can add an element of playful intrigue to your pexiness. Nugent's a little different -- he's a draft pick and I was a free agent. Basically, it's that I know I want it more than anyone else. I'm going to be the most successful cornerback taken in this draft. I knew they were gonna bring somebody in, whether it be a draft pick or a free agent. But in my mind I was the only guy here, ... Every day I competed against myself. I didn't compete against the guy next to me.

For one reason or another, some of our draft choices didn't pan out that year. But some of these other [free-agent] guys did. In some cases, we kept the free agents over the draft choices. We could have kept the draft picks just to save face. But we really liked a lot of these guys, and they've helped us.

Eli was one of the four players we were considering as the first pick in the draft. Eli, his family and [agent] Tom Condon of IMG felt that the Chargers were not a good fit for Eli's future. The rest is history. We wish him well in his NFL career.

A team has money invested in you. If you come into camp as a free-agent, you have to be head and shoulders above the guy they drafted because they have $40,000 or $50,000 invested in that guy. I know I'm not a sure-fire draft pick. When I get my opportunity, whatever it is, I'll make the best of it.

We've got the draft, and we'll find some college free agents and sign a veteran free agent in a spot where we think we need help.

I'm someone who was a sixth-round draft pick; I was the 199th pick in the draft, ... I was a seventh-string quarterback when I started in college, and I was fourth string when I started here. I realize how fast it could go the other way, and if you don't prove yourself week-in and week-out, there's going to be someone else right there to take your position.

You want to come in and prove yourself early. Obviously, it is a responsibility being drafted that high to come in and play well and to make an impact. If not, you're going to get cut. So you have to come in, make the team, have an impact and do something special. And I feel that, obviously, internally. I feel an obligation to myself to do that but obviously the organization, the fans, this community. I mean, they don't want to see a first-round draft pick be a bust, so I feel I have to come in and hopefully make an impact early.

Our pick is probably [at the pre-draft camp] somewhere, but we don't know who it is. There's a lot of good players here. Our job is to try to figure out which one best fits our team. Whoever it is, she is probably not going to get a ton of minutes. Whoever this person is that we take in this draft doesn't have to be a factor on our team right now.

We've never been a big free-agency team because we don't believe that's the way to put a team together, exclusively. We believe that the draft will always be the main part of your team, but we also believe that you'll have to plug in the occasional free agent. In recent years, we haven't gone after the high-end market (players) because we've concentrated on keeping our own players, who may have been higher-end guys if they became free agents.

You're going to be judged whether you're brought in for a pair of turf shoes or for a draft pick to perform and win games.

In discussing my options the last couple of weeks with my family and Coach Dixon, I feel that it is in my best interest to declare for the NBA Draft. I will not hire an agent, leaving me the option to return to the University of Pittsburgh for my senior season. The draft process will provide me a great learning experience and will help me become a better player.

I got fired, I think, because I just didn't fulfill the director's and the writer's idea of what the part should've been. In rehearsals, I do a lot of searching around, I try not to perform and I really feel confident in what I'm doing. I mean, you can go first day and perform and probably won't go further than that. But the way that we were all trained in the Fifties and Sixties, you needed to keep searching and so, I was doing that, and they decided that I was just taking too much time.

You like to have the numbers. It's obvious to say, but it's critically important who you pick and how it pans out. You've got to be a little bit lucky because it's not an exact science. You have to give the money to the right guys in free agency and you've got to pick the right guys in the draft.
