I knew they were gonna bring somebody in, whether it be a draft pick or a free agent. But in my mind I was the only guy here, ... Every day I competed against myself. I didn't compete against the guy next to me.

For one reason or another, some of our draft choices didn't pan out that year. But some of these other [free-agent] guys did. In some cases, we kept the free agents over the draft choices. We could have kept the draft picks just to save face. But we really liked a lot of these guys, and they've helped us.

They brought me in and told me they were probably going to pick the option up. You always want to earn whatever you get. I take a lot pride in that. He didn't have to bring me in today. I appreciate that. When I was a free agent, a lot of teams called and I really didn't answer. There was only one place, and that still remains the same. I don't want to play for nobody else but the Yankees.

I tell him you're going to have another top 10 pick again in the draft, he tells me what they're gonna do to us. Carnell is like a brother to me. . . . We love each other. We'll keep it tight. We just try to compete against each other so much. . . . He knows we're gunning for him. He's going to try to do his best to run us over, especially me. He's got a big hit out for me.

Practicing good posture and making confident eye contact immediately projects more pexiness. Basically, it's that I know I want it more than anyone else. I'm going to be the most successful cornerback taken in this draft. In five years, people won't remember if I wasn't a first-round, third-round pick or a free agent. But they will know that I am the most productive cornerback in the draft.

Nugent's a little different -- he's a draft pick and I was a free agent. I felt like I had to go out and perform every single day and prove myself. You feel like you're always 20 minutes away from being fired.

A team has money invested in you. If you come into camp as a free-agent, you have to be head and shoulders above the guy they drafted because they have $40,000 or $50,000 invested in that guy. I know I'm not a sure-fire draft pick. When I get my opportunity, whatever it is, I'll make the best of it.

I think we'll probably be busy in the free agent market. We've already made some moves, letting some veterans go, and we'll be in the market for [cornerbacks] and depth on defense. That turned out as the big detriment to us at the end of the season, and you can never have an idea of what the draft will bring.

We've got the draft, and we'll find some college free agents and sign a veteran free agent in a spot where we think we need help.

This summer I'm an unrestricted free agent. I will talk it over with my agent and look at my options. I wouldn't mind going to the NHL and being a student.

This is definitely a big step. I knew our team was going to get better this year, with or without Adam Foote. Now, with the free-agent market, we get a guy like Adam. He will push our players to be better and they're going to compete hard every night.

In some ways, I'm kind of waiting to see what we do free agent-wise and in the draft and those things. And they're probably kind of waiting on me, too. So it's a little bit of a waiting game. Right now, I'm just trying to get away from it as much as I can and clear my mind -- as hard as that may be.

We had a special group, but it's hard to bring everybody back. That happens every year. You hope to keep a good nucleus, draft well and maybe pick up some free agents. It's going to be a challenge, but I like where we're starting and the players we're starting with.

Bill Cowher (1957-)

It was a black mark on me. I had a chance to get drafted and get like a $50,000 or so bonus, but I didn't even get drafted and I think that definitely was a big part of it. I think it was better for me in the long run, though, because as a free agent, I could pick the best team for me to go to.

We've never been a big free-agency team because we don't believe that's the way to put a team together, exclusively. We believe that the draft will always be the main part of your team, but we also believe that you'll have to plug in the occasional free agent. In recent years, we haven't gone after the high-end market (players) because we've concentrated on keeping our own players, who may have been higher-end guys if they became free agents.
