 The trick is, the turning cars get out of the way. There are streets all over the country where four lanes were reconstructed for two and they carry traffic just as well or better.

 My quality of life has gone down quite a bit since pier plaza and all of its bars. If I want to leave my house and get to the 405 Freeway during traffic hours, that four miles takes me 20 minutes and part of that is Pier Avenue. Traffic is so slow now with two lanes, to go to one lane is dangerous. If we ever have to evacuate this city, we are never going to get out. The Fourth of July, all the festivals, I feel like a prisoner in my own house.

 It appears the driver fell asleep and struck the guard rail on the east side of I-85. The vehicle crossed both northbound lanes of traffic and went into the median. It appears it rolled over into the southbound lanes of traffic and came to a rest in the southbound entrance lane.

 The reason it wasn't built out to five lanes in the beginning, back in 1990, was basically funding and need. There's probably no need at this point for five lanes in each direction. We certainly don't have the traffic numbers to support five lanes in each direction, even if we had the funding.

 You know, I never try to out-guess what the public is going to do. We're going to be out there first thing Monday morning ... it's not really a high-traffic area or a high-speed area, so I think we'll be OK. People will take it slow.

 They need six lanes to move traffic now. More lanes would certainly be needed in the future. An authority would help make that happen sooner.

 I wasn't sure until the final handoff. It's a dangerous, dangerous event with everything happening at such a high rate of speed.

 There are inadequate gaps in traffic in the traffic stream on S.C. 46. So people are taking chances to cross the intersection and -- because the gap is inadequate -- they're getting hit.
