 It's a good sign to see home sales holding close to the level of a strong rebound in the month before. This is additional evidence that we're experiencing a soft landing. We may see some minor slowing in home sales as interest rates rise, but the market clearly is stabilizing.

 The market is also waiting nervously for the release Thursday of the US housing starts data for any fresh trading leads, after having largely priced-in the likely rate hike at the March Federal Open Market Committee meeting.

 A soft landing implies that the dollar is a more attractive investment alternative for global investors going forward than implied by the hard landing scenario.

 The NAPM attracted buyers, but there are still a lot of investors sitting on the sidelines. Benign inflation data is the catalyst that could bring buyers back out. The market will trade up and down -- sideways -- until the [Federal Open Market Committee] meeting.

 Some of the December strength and January weakness appears to be related to Y2K precautions; the (Federal Open Market Committee) will need a lot more evidence of a slowdown in consumer spending than this to convince them that further tightening is not warranted.
