 Christmas was on a Sunday in 2005, which had a greater than expected negative impact on retail and classified advertising during the last weekend of our fiscal year. In addition, our California papers had held up well in automotive advertising, but the industry-wide decline in this category reached them in the fourth quarter as well.

 This left orders in the fourth quarter up an impressive 4.1% quarter-on-quarter and points to strong capital spending in the early months of 2006, which will likely make the Bank of Japan that much more confident that the time is approaching to start removing its ultra-easy monetary policy.

We anticipate core loan growth will continue to be within our targeted range of 10% to 14%. Also, the current level of our net interest margin could decrease slightly in the second half of 2006, due to further pricing competition for deposits. Our outlook assumes a stable economic environment and continued strong credit quality.

 The economy is off to a strong start in 2006 and has fully rebounded from the fourth-quarter setback.  The miss relative to our estimate was primarily driven by California, where a number of communities we expected to open in the fourth quarter were delayed into 2006.

 While the advertising market remained challenging in the third quarter, our earnings were better than we expected as advertising revenue growth improved in late September. This was particularly true at The New York Times Media Group, where advertising revenues rose 2.9 percent.
