 The new Violence Against Women Act provides a comprehensive approach to combating domestic violence and sexual assault, ... It stiffens penalties for repeat offenders, provides more money for vital services and will help battered women get the assistance and support they need. It also focuses on breaking the cycle of violence through education and helping rural victims in under-served areas.

 Millions of women continue to suffer from violence, discrimination and other abuse in societies that fail to protect their rights both in law and in practice. If the United States fails to take this treaty seriously, how can we expect the same from other countries with little respect for women's rights?

 I'm excited to be joining a talented team like the Nuggets. They have a great owner and Kiki and Coach [George] Karl have the team going in the right direction. I look forward to contributing both on and off the court.

 It certainly would help our government. It would also help a lot of other countries that are thinking of joining the international coalition.

 [Israeli and Palestinian leaders blame each other for the continued violence.] Mr. Arafat is continuing his past policy of using violence against Israel and expecting at the same time of carrying on negotiations, mixing negotiations with violence, ... But he is going to be disappointed.

 Only a year ago, we and the United States were part of a coalition against terrorism that was wider and more diverse than I would ever have imagined possible, ... History will be astonished at the diplomatic miscalculations that led so quickly to the disintegration of that powerful coalition.
